Overview

Assist UNIC Canberra with communications and support activities.

You have:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications including Microsoft Office 365 and Google programs.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Fluency in English is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position is located in the United Nations Information Centre in Canberra (UNIC Canberra), within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Department of Global Communications (DGC). The UNIC is part of the global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs), and UNIC Canberra is the principal source of information about the United Nations system in Australia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. It is responsible for promoting public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by communicating the work of the UN to a local audience in local languages; engaging local and regional partners; and, overall, bringing the United Nations closer to the peoples it serves. The duration of the internship is 6 months during an academic semester. The internship is UNPAID and part-time. Interns work two (2) days per week (14 hours), part-time, under the supervision of the National Information Officer and other office staff. The selected intern will perform duties to include, but not limited to, the following: • Assist with the planning and delivery of a 2026 SDG-themed activity with academic partners. • Assist with the development of interactive tools highlighting the work of the UN in the Pacific region. • Assist with content and design of videos, social media posts and conduct analysis of social media metrics. • Assist with the production of communication products (e.g. website content, presentations). • Conducting research, compiling information, coordinating logistics, and assisting with public enquiries. • Assist with preparations for other events, high-level visitors from headquarters and field offices, and speaking engagements. • Compile, analyse and organise data for office reports. • Attend meetings and draft summaries. • Perform other tasks as necessary.

Qualifications/special skills

Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Program, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Applicants must also: • Be computer literate in standard software applications including Microsoft Office 365 and Google programs. • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required.
