Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional levels. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of global consensus on environmental issues by keeping the environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP) is one of the UNEP-administered Regional Seas Programmes. CEP is managed by and for the countries of the Wider Caribbean Region (WCR) through its role as Secretariat for the Cartagena Convention and three Protocols on Oil Spills, Marine Biodiversity (SPAW), and Land-Based Sources of Marine Pollution.

There are three main Sub-Programmes through which the work of the Cartagena Convention Secretariat is implemented:

  • Assessment and Management of Environmental Pollution (AMEP)
  • Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW)
  • Communication, Education, Training and Awareness (CETA)

The objectives of our Communications Sub-Programme are to:

  • Improve educational systems to promote positive attitudinal and behavioral changes on environmental management;
  • Develop and implement training programmes for the management of coastal and marine resources;
  • Support public awareness efforts by the media, private sector, community-based, and non-governmental organizations to demonstrate the value of marine and coastal resources;
  • Increase access to data and information on coastal and marine resource management through strengthening of CEP website, networks and databases; and
  • Disseminate information resulting from the implementation of our projects and activities.

The duration of the Internship is for a minimum of three months, with a possibility for extension up to a maximum of six months, depending on the needs of the Organization. The Internship is UNPAID and full time. The Interns will work five days per week (35 hours) under the direct supervision of Christopher Corbin, Officer-in-Charge and Programme Management Officer for AMEP and CETA.

Responsibilities Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

¿ Assist in the: (i) design of infographics and other promotional materials; (ii) compilation and dissemination of promotional and awareness materials at national/regional events; (iii) development of social media campaigns (e.g. #gettoknowCEP) and posting of materials on the Secretariat’s website, social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Instagram); and (iv) represent the Secretariat and deliver talks at national promotional events, exhibitions etc. including activities in support of UN commemorative days.

  • Liaise with relevant national, regional and international agencies and organizations on the implementation on the 2021/2022 Work Plan and Budget relating to CETA.

¿ Assist with logistical arrangements for the 2022/2023 Intergovernmental/ Technical Meetings for the SPAW and LBS Protocols.

¿ Assist in summarizing reports on the implementation of the Cartagena Convention and its Protocols by Contracting Parties.

¿ Provide communication support to major ongoing projects including UNDP/GEF/PROCARIBE+, GEF CReW+ Project , EU ACP MEA , PROMAR Project.

¿ Assist in the review and dissemination of the findings of the State of Convention Area Report (SOCAR) on Pollution and the State of Marine Biodiversity Report.

¿ Assist with updating the Focal Point Database and Media Contact List.

¿ Sort and catalogue images in the CEP Photo Database.

¿ Assist in the reorganizing of the Publications Room and the CEP library.

¿ Assist in the restructuring of the internal knowledge management.

¿ Assist in the preparation of documentation and presentations for national, regional and/or global meetings; and

¿ Collect information and undertake desk-based research.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);

c. Have graduated with a university degree.

Be computer literate in standard office software applications (MS Office Suite).

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of Spanish is highly desirable. Knowledge of other UN Official languages is desirable (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat).

NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
