Org. Setting and Reporting United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice . UNICRI' s goals are:

- to advance understanding of crime-related problems; - to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; - to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; - to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

This internship position is located in the Centralized Management Unit (CMU) of UNICRI in Turin, Italy. The main objective of this internship is to assist the CMU team in preparation and compilation of Guidelines and Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs) for various CMU’s internal processes and activities, including those of Human Resources, Information Technology (ITC), Procurement, etc.

Currently, given the pandemic-related situation, UNICRI has active Alternate Working Arrangements in place. This means that UNICRI personnel works in a hybrid modality, both from the premises and in telecommuting, observing the current footprint limits established for the UNICRIN HQ.

In this context, applicants to this Internship position may be requested to undertake the internship also remotely in telecommuting. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely and must have all necessary arrangements and equipment (including a computer and internet connection) to perform assignments in teleworking.

The internship is for an initial period of 2 months, with an opportunity for extension up to a total period of 6months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Administrative Assistant (Human Resources) and the overall guidance of the Chief, Centralized Management Unit, and in collaboration with other CMU team members.

Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Administrative Assistant (Human Resources), intern shall perform the following tasks: - Research, document and compile applicable United Nations standards, as well as local guidelines, laws, good practices, and documents to be used for the creation of “A Guide for Newcomers to the UNICRI HQ in Turin”, including the review, extraction, summary and translation into English of: o the existing legal framework in Italy, with respect to the installment of foreign UN staff- and non-staff members and their family members in Italy; o documents, forms, and questionnaires, required by the local authorities; o applicable local information on insurance, health care, international schools and child care, banking, housing, leisure, culture, etc.; - Research, compile, and re-draft the UNICRI’s HR standard operating procedure (SOP) for “On-boarding of newcomers”; - Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, presentations, etc. for various strategic and operational management issues; - Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Preferred areas of study: journalism, communication, law, media, public relations, political science, development studies, languages, literature, translation, and/or related fields.

Further, applicants shall: - Be computer literate in standard software applications. - Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Previous working experience in guest relations, journalism, tourism, public relations, or other similar fields is desirable for this position.

Languages Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Good writing skills (reporting/journalistic style), especially in English, are considered necessary. In addition, fluency of Italian language (host country language) is required.

Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. If interns are required to travel to duty station, costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses shall be the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

The UNICRI Internship Programme is in no way connected with appointment to: a) positions at the professional level and above carrying international recruitment status, b) positions in Field Service category (FS-6 and FS-7), c) positions of consultants and d) positions of UNICRI fellows during the period of the internship or for the six months immediately following the expiration of the internship. Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and not publish any reports or papers based on such information except with the explicit written authorization of the Chief of CMU. Interns are bound by the same duties and obligations as staff members, and the information to which an intern has access in the course of the internship must not be divulged to external parties.

On completion of their internship, interns are required to complete a substantive report on their assignments. This will be included in their file and will be forwarded, upon request, to the sponsoring institution, government body or private organization.

United Nations Considerations According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
