Org. Setting and Reporting The Secretary-General recognizes that the United Nations is not immune to racism and racial discrimination and has called for action to identify, prevent and address racism and racial discrimination in the Organization in an 18-month campaign on awareness and action through December 2021.

In support of his efforts, the Secretary-General has established the “Task Force to Address Racism and Promote Dignity for all in the United Nations”, that will conduct its work through 30 September 2021.

The activities of the Task Force are supported by seven (7) sub-working groups that are required to examine the extend of personal, interpersonal, structural and institutional racism and racial discrimination in the Organization and make recommendations that will form the basis of the development of a Strategic Action Plan on addressing racism and promoting dignity for all in the United Nations.

The intern will report to the chairperson or alternate chairperson of the assigned sub-working of the Task Force.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the chairperson or alternate chairperson of the assigned sub-working of the Task Force, the intern will:

Research, compile and organize information and reference materials from various sources in support of the activities of the assigned sub-working group and for reporting, workplan, studies, briefings, meetings, etc.

Participate and take notes in meetings involving external partners engaged to support the activities of the assigned sub-working group.

Compile, summarize and enter data on sub-working group deliverables; draft related status reports and identifiy delays in delivery and bring them to the attention of chairperson of the sub-working group.

Assist with simple statistical/data analysis.

Assist in the maintenance of websites by scanning, converting and posting a variety of documents onto the site.

Assist in the preparation of presentation materials using appropriate technology/software.

Maintain electronic files and databases for sub-working group.

Show initiative and propose new ways to coordinate and streamline the work of the assigned sub-working group.

Provide other administrative and programmatic support to the assigned sub-working group.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

1. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) in administration or related area; c) If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at an university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree in business or public administration or related area;

2. Be computer literate in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar; Be proficient in standard office automation equipment scanner, printer, etc.

3. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.

4. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Special Notice Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.
