Result of Service Design of renovation and restructuring plan of the office, that will optimize the utilization of lights, space and furniture, fixtures, equipment, accessories etc. and enable an effective and efficient work environment given the demands of digital and video modalities as well as social distancing.

Duties and Responsibilities 1. Background of the assignment:

UNICRI is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI's goals are:

  • to advance understanding of crime-related problems;
  • to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems;
  • to support the respect of international instruments and other standards;
  • to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

2. Purpose of the assignment:

UNICRI Director has the overall responsibility for the organization, direction and administration of the Institute within the terms of the authority delegated to the Director by the Secretary-General. UNICRI Director represents the Institute and communicates with other organs and bodies of the United Nations, the specialized agencies and international, national and regional institutions, Governments and intergovernmental organizations, as well as non-governmental organizations and academic and philanthropic institutions.

In light of the new way of working necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Office of UNICRI Director requires design enhancements to provide the Director with an adequate, modern, professional, and comfortable working environment, enabled primarily for participation in video-meetings and conferences, webinars, and video-interviews, and also for reception of internal and external visitors, taking into consideration the need for social distancing. Particular attention shall be given to new and professional lighting solutions and video backgrounds, to enable the Director to conduct video-calls and other video engagements from the office with a suitable professional background that is also branded for the United Nations and/or UNICRI.

In light of the above, UNICRI is seeking an experienced interior designer to elaborate the design, renovation, and restructuring plan of the office, that will optimize the utilization of lights, space and furniture, fixtures, equipment, and accessories and enable an effective and efficient work environment given the demands of digital and video modalities as well as social distancing.

3. Specific tasks to be performed by the consultant:

The Office of the Director (46.17 m2) is located on the first floor of the UNICRI pavilion in the UN Campus of Turin. The pavilions of the campus were originally built by the Italian Government in 1961.

The Interior Designer will be responsible for the following tasks:

1. Review the existing structure of the Office, and collect data on precise needs and requirements, including through discussions with the Director, Assistant to the Director, IT Assistant, and other UNICRI staff as relevant;

2. Prepare minimum three layout designs (as renders) for the renovation, restructuring, and refurbishing of the following:

a. Illumination/lighting setup, taking into consideration professional requirements to conduct video calls, webinars, etc., to record video interviews, and to take official photographs. The design shall take into consideration current natural lighting conditions. The design shall be comprised of the installation plan, including the following: i. Electrical design ii. Ceiling and lighting design layout iii. Power layout iv. Emergency power scheme (if required) v. Auxiliary layout: telephone, LAN (structure cabling and wifi) and DATA vi. Sound system layout and paging system

b. Director’s workstation(s), taking into consideration ergonomics and requirements for the efficient and safe work with the PC, including videoconferencing setup and hybrid videoconferencing modalities; c. Meeting area, including seating plan for visitors, utilizing available space effectively; d. Blinds/curtains and furniture & fixtures, including proposals for color palette and materials; e. Floors and ceilings (where applicable), including proposals for color palette and materials; f. Backdrop(s) or background(s) for video calls; and g. Decoration elements, including branding for the United Nations and/or UNICRI.

The layouts shall take into consideration the pre-existing architectural structure and historical value of the building, allowing for the modern superficial update and re-design.

3. Prepare template of a suitable professional backdrop for video-calls and other video engagements branded specifically for UNICRI, which can be quickly produced for the use of other UNICRI personnel.

4. Prepare the architectural/engineering plan for the move of the internal door leading to the pre-existing server room, to ensure that it is relocated outside the Director’s Office.

All layouts and plans shall outline specifications/schedules of finishes, as well as the estimated budget.

6. Present the renders, templates and plans (along with the specifications and budget estimates) to the Director in person for discussion.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree in interior design, architecture, engineering and/or other related fields and a working license in Italy is required. Experience: A minimum of 10 years of experience in the area of architectural/interior design pertaining to architectural/interior design programming, conceptual design, schematic design & design development, construction documents, etc. is required. Experience pertaining to a diverse range and scale of projects including commercial/organizational premises is required. Experience with applicable architectural, construction and electrical/lighting codes/norms is required. Experience with the United Nations requirements and/or previous experience with the UN offices in similar assignments is desirable.

The candidates are required to list at least three references, which will be verified prior to selection. The candidates are also required to present samples/portfolio of their computed works in interior design. Language: Fluency (written and oral proficiency) in English and Italian is required.
