ABOUT WFP

The United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies, and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. Every day 5,600 WFP-chartered trucks are on the road; 100 planes are in the air and 30 ships are at sea.

Work as hard as we might, through drought and floods, conflict and peace, disasters natural or man-made, the needs are immense and growing. 828 million people in the world do not have enough food to eat. To get to a world with Zero Hunger faster, WFP has significantly increased resources in recent years from donor governments. We are now investing in and growing private sector fundraising (PPF) to reach more people.

The Private Partnerships & Fundraising Division (PPF) is responsible for mobilizing resources from the private sector. PPF has developed an ambitious five-year strategy and our ambition is based on need. WFP’s private sector strategy (2020 – 2025) proposes to dramatically increase income from individuals to help reach more people and get to Zero Hunger faster, using new digital engagement tools to reach audiences across the globe in a flexible and cost-effective way.

INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISING

In the first three years of the new growth strategy the PPF Individual Giving (IG) team recruited 130k new supporters from over 190 countries primarily through digital advertising (Facebook and Search) with some local DRTV testing. Annual income more than quadrupled from $3m in FY19 to $27m in FY22 with growth ambitions going far beyond this.

Our focus is a digital-first strategy, working through a centralised global team recruiting supporters primarily through digital channels and building an outstanding supporter experience through a multi-channel loyalty programme that delivers a best-in-class donor experience. The programme now recruits donors in English, French, German, Spanish and Arabic, with language capabilities also including Korean, and it delivers the supporter experience through email, SMS, WhatsApp, outbound telephone and Facebook.

To escalate growth further and diversify this successful digital programme, WFP PPF intends to expand and localise the global digital fundraising programme in the Republic of Korea during 2023 in collaboration with WFP Seoul Global Office (SEO). Together, the aim is to take forwards the learnings and best practice attained internationally and launch a hybrid programme in a profitable market, that offers high returns on investment and a sustainable stream of loyal donors through its affinity for regular giving.
