Result of Service The incumbent is responsible for providing advice, creative ideas, implementing graphic designs jobs for client projects and creatively designing and laying out high quality information materials and print media projects in form of publications, posters, newsletters, brochures, banners and other related jobs as required. He/she is also expected to complete projects in a timely manner, once specifications have been agreed upon. In addition, follow up to set guidelines and procedures governing publications at ECA.

Expected duration The duration of the contract is for a period of six months upon signing of the contract.

Duties and Responsibilities Background

The African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC), through the Regional Integration & Trade Division, is a specialized unit within the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Its mission is to act as the leading Africa-based Centre of excellence and a continental hub for providing and coordinating technical support for the development of trade policies in Africa. ATPC works with stakeholders at all levels to enhance the implementation of sound national, regional and international trade strategies, policies and programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Coordinator of African Trade Policy Centre, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:

  • Create visual assets for web and print using the appropriate graphic software such as Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Acrobat
  • Collaborate with team to find opportunities for visual storytelling
  • Turn multi-dimensional data into attractive and accessible graphics
  • Clarify and discuss early ideas with sketches or mock-ups
  • Turn concepts into engaging graphs, infographics and more
  • Edits photographs/text/graphics/artwork, changes image size, resolutions and cropping
  • Produce video animations and give advice on video production from a graphic point of view
  • Work within branding guidelines and help to improve and evolve them
  • Communicate the best parts of our data (but not do the data crunching itself)
  • Provide creative and strategic input on visualization alternatives to meet the communication needs of the publications
  • Plan, prepare, and coordinate infographic designs for ATPC publications to effectively and visually communicate key messages, statistical data, and policy recommendations
  • Design templates (including in electronic formats) for policy briefs, books, newsletters, press releases, research papers, discussion papers, fact sheets, etc..
  • Using ECA’s graphic design standards, lead the overall layout and design of the covers for both French and English versions of the publications
  • Conduct internal training to the communications team to enhance design capability
  • Design ATPC’s quarterly newsletter using images and text

    Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Diploma in Graphics Arts/Design from recognized college is an advantage. Experience: Seven years of relevant experience in publications production including desktop publishing, graphic design and layout, or related area. Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
