How can you make a difference?

In consultation with field offices and technical sections, the AWD/Cholera Coordinator will also develop a preparedness and prevention plan for 2023 AWD season based on a comprehensive assessment, mapping and analysis of the current and previous outbreaks including medium term prevention activities in identified hotspots.

Scope of Work, Deliverables:

  • Coordinate UNICEF’s overall AWD/Cholera preparedness for 2023 ensure all technical sections within Afghanistan CO, as well as the field offices, are participating in an integrated and complementary way.
  • Participate in external coordination meetings including joint planning meetings with WHO and other key stakeholders.
  • Review the response, so far, and advise on appropriate course corrections for improved coordination (internal /external) and strengthened preparedness and response, including a review of the current response at the field level, eg. monitoring of the Integrated Emergency Response Teams (IERTs), and advise ZOs where gaps are identified.
  • Conduct a lesson learned exercise on the AWD/Cholera response to inform future preparedness and prevention and response activities.
  • Lead the analysis of AWD/cholera-specific data, needs, priorities and responses and use the analysis to develop a 2023 preparedness plan including short and medium-term response actions.
  • Identify strategies to ensure that people have information to protect their health and dignity and the means to maintain safe water, sanitation, food hygiene, hygiene practices, etc. identification and treatment for AWD/cholera and that they are mobilised to take action to mitigate cholera risks.
  • Facilitate consideration of gender, equity, and diversity in all elements of AWD/cholera prevention, preparedness, and response.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have:

Education: Advanced university degree or equivalent experience in Public Health, Public Health Engineering; Environmental Health; Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH); or another relevant field.

Work Experience: Advanced Knowledge of health, epidemiology, water, sanitation and hygiene, public health engineering and social behavior change/community engagement including the use of participatory methodologies; Experience leading and coordinating multi-sectoral AWD/cholera response teams, government agencies, local authorities, international organizations, and NGOs in AWD/cholera response; A minimum of five years of experience in emergency multi-sectoral AWD/cholera response or similar contexts; A minimum of 8 years in the field of WASH or Health; Assessment, analysis, planning and personnel management skills; Good communication, networking and organizational skills and ability to work well on a team; Ability to work well under pressure and in response to rapidly changing needs.

Language requirements:

Fluency in English. Good written and spoken skills in the language of the humanitarian operation and knowledge of another UN language an asset.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
