  1. General Background

The Global Communications Service relies upon quality professional photography to communicate UNHCR’s brand and messages in products across the organization’s platforms, including the UNHCR global web site, global and senior leader social media accounts, UNHCR’s emergency funding appeals and flagship publications, Global Trends, Global Appeals etc. Quality professional images are essential to promote understanding of UNHCR’s work and illustrate the organization’s messages. Photojournalist Tiksa Negeri is heading to South Sudan to shoot photography for a range of online and offline fundraising products, as well as possible web stories and social media posts. Tiksa will illustrate any web stories being written by the writer. Tiksa is a seasoned photojournalist who works regularly for UNHCR.

  1. Purpose and Scope of the Assignment

The photographer will shoot photography illustrating UNHCR key messages in South Sudan. Photographer will work with a writer and videographer on the ground to capture photos of refugees and displaced people affected by climate change. The Content team will interview people for detail-rich story text and gather consent from people per UNHCR’s guidelines.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, needs a seasoned professional photographer with experience shooting in refugee situations/conflict zones, to take photographs of UNHCR’s operations in South Sudan. He will show displaced people and UNHCR’s response. The photographer should research displaced people and operations relevant to UNHCR’s messages and interview people and write good captions and metadata to accompany images. The photographer must also complete consent forms for all the forcibly displaced people profiled individually. The photographer will liaise with the office and Photo Unit to ensure thorough coverage.

Responsibilities:

• Research displaced people whose stories and experiences embody UNHCR messaging. • Shoot compelling colour photographs that illustrate the displacement situation and UNHCR’s messages and activities. Shoot photos for web stories being written by the writer. Shoot thematic images. • Deliver professional level post-production and captions for photos to the specifications of the Photographer’s Guidelines and file the best edit of photos to Refugees Media. • Interview displaced people and include their personal details and quotes in metadata and captions. • Ensure consent forms are filed for every person or family who appears in a photo portrait (as opposed to a wide shot). • Meet frequent tight deadlines. • Liaise with the team on the ground to ensure stories and press statements are illustrated and activities covered. • The photographer will need to coordinate their own logistics and support, as well as liaise with the office to plan activities. • The photographer will need to keep the Photo Unit informed of their movements and plans and filing. • If there’s extra time, the photographer can provide guidance and training to staff photographers.

Experienced photojournalist who has worked for news and humanitarian agencies in refugee emergencies/conflict areas.

Photojournalist Tiksa Negeri, will travel to South Sudan to gather photography on UNHCR’s Hardest Hit campaign. He will work with a staff member from PSP who will serve as the writer on this three-person content team.Standard Job Description
