Liberia is a post conflict country. The country is generally safer, with the exception of petty crimes especially in the cities. The United Nations maintained a strong presence throughout Liberia. It is mandatory to complete the following: Basic Security in the Field and Advance Security in the Field. The current UN security level for Liberia is Level 2. It however varies in certain parts of the country. Upon arrival in the country, all UN staff receive a security briefing from the UNDSS section. There is a lack of infrastructure in certain areas, such as running water, electricity, and sanitation. However, a UNV Transit House provides a temporary accommodation for all UN Volunteers, and it has all basic facilities: bedrooms with air conditioner for men and women, toilets, bathrooms, running water etc. The US dollars is widely used and accepted everywhere and can be easily exchanged with the Liberian Dollar. Credit cards and travelers’ checks are not accepted in Liberia. But cash machines/ ATMs are available in Liberia. There are some private sport structures in the town, including a gym at the One UN House with monthly payments in place.

The One UN House has a medical facility located within the building supporting all personnel with standard medical care. In selecting things to bring, take in consideration that Liberia can get hot and humid. It is therefore advised to come with light clothing that is easy to wash (most accommodations do not have facility for washing machines). Mobile phones (GSM) work in Liberia. Any Liberian sim-card is bought at the Airport or in Monrovia for between US$1-5.

In Monrovia, apartment-type accommodation can be found in areas such as Mamba Point area. These are of various standards and usually come furnished with water and electricity and security guards, in compliance with UN security requirements. Prices are negotiable. There are other areas for residence such as the Sinkor and Congo Town suburbs of Monrovia. In the latter area, rent would generally be less expensive. Private accommodation possibilities are limited and getting a house according to the security measures can take about 2 or 4 weeks. In other field location, guest houses exist but being fixed in order accommodates the sudden increase of staff.

There are only three (2) airlines officially recognized by UN System: Kenya Airways (Thrice a week via Accra) and Air Brussels (Thrice a week).
