Contract

This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

UN Human Rights is engaged with Pacific Governments and civil society on human rights and sustainable development. UN Human Rights works to mainstream civic space and provides support to civil society organisations, and Human Rights Defenders to ensure the meaningful participation of civil society at national and regional levels. In some Pacific countries, civic space and the enjoyment of public freedoms continue to be fragile in a context in which democratic institutions have been compromised. The democratic space supported by these institutions is extremely vulnerable. Legislation might be used to supress dissenting voices by political opponents and Human Rights Defenders as well as to restrict the exercise of their public freedoms, especially the freedoms of expression, assembly and association.

Under the overall supervision of the Regional Representative, and direct supervision of the Deputy Regional Representative for the Pacific, in collaboration with the UN Human Rights and/or the Human Rights Officer (Legal) and/or Human Rights Officer (Youth), the UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: 1). Support the strengthening of the Pacific Human Rights Defenders Network with a view to provide ongoing capacity building support to civil society and Human Rights Defenders to protect and widen civic space in the region;
2). Engage in educational and promotional activities in the Pacific region to raise awareness on human rights; including through the organisation of events and public engagements; 3) Undertake research and support the development of publications and other materials; 4). Develop creative communications and outreach products, engage with local media and support the sharing of information of related activities on social media.
