This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

For 70 years, UNICEF has been working to promote children's survival, protection, and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations, and governments. The Kenya Country Office is based in Nairobi, Kenya. The UN Volunteer will be in the Human Resources Section of UNICEF’s Kenya Country Office

Under the direct supervision of the Human Resources Manager, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Support in recruitment and onboarding • Support staffing and recruitment planning. • Prepare and circulate internal and external advertisements. • Liaise with candidates in the various stages of the recruitment process. • Assist in tracking, monitoring, and analyzing recruitment progress. • Support the HR business partners in guiding clientele on HR systems such as talent management and Agora. • Assist in the preparation of the onboarding package and schedule as well as orientation for new hires. • Coordinate closely with the Operations Specialist for HQ outposted staff to ensure the effective onboarding of new HQ outposted staff. • Perform any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

  2. Support in learning and capacity development • Assist team in organizing and conducting courses, workshops, and events by preparing and organizing the distribution of materials for participants, ensuring availability of training venues, and required equipment and supplies, while providing logistical and secretarial support at workshops and events as necessary.

  3. Support in data analytics and internal communication • Support the HR Associate in compiling and analyzing information and data related to posts and staff for reports on staffing trends. • Consolidate and publish the HR Newsletter. • Update the KCO HR webpage as required.

  4. Support in the processing of entitlement and benefits • In consultation with the supervisor, analyze, research, and verify the information to respond to staff queries on areas related to benefits and entitlements. Maintain and prepare personnel-related records and files, ensuring all information on each staff member is up-to-date and accurate.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and taking active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day). • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities. • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers. • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Human Resources HR Management experience in an international organization or experience in a humanitarian/development setting is an asset.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
