Overview

Assist in maintaining a safe and welcoming shelter environment.

You have:

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working in shelter or emergency response settings preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to interact with diverse populations.
  • English fluency required; Spanish proficiency strongly preferred.
  • Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Valid driver's license, active auto insurance, and reliable transportation required.
  • Must be eligible to obtain an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card within 90 days of hire.

Job Summary:

The Shelter Aide will work with the main goal of maintaining a safe, welcoming, space to save lives during the summer heat and help residents move forward to more stable and sustainable housing situations.

This position includes assisting with shelter set up and clean up as needed, monitoring the shelter check-in line, assisting with the check-in process, and entering guest information into the database. The Shelter Coordinator will orient new guests to shelter guidelines and expectations while connecting them to appropriate resources available.

Major Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Assist with daily shelter setup, takedown, cleaning, and general maintenance to ensure a sanitary and safe environment.

• Welcome guests, monitor the check-in process, and orient new arrivals to shelter rules and available resources.

• Monitor guest areas to ensure all residents are safe, comfortable, and treated with dignity and respect.

• Respond to guest questions and requests regarding shelter services; provide appropriate referrals when needed.

• Coordinate incident de-escalation with staff and security as needed, and document any critical events or needs.

• Maintain accurate records of guest entry and exit using electronic systems.

• Store and label guest belongings in line with shelter policies.

• Stock and distribute shelter supplies, including meals, hygiene items, clothing, and bedding.

• Support volunteer engagement, offering guidance, directions, and assistance to ensure a meaningful experience.

• Participate in program and team meetings, agency events, and required training.

• Collaborate with the shelter management team to ensure effective communication and smooth operations.

• Uphold IRC policies and values including the IRC Way, Child Safeguarding, and client confidentiality standards.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education: High School diploma or GED required.

Work Experience: Experience working in shelter or emergency response settings preferred.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to interact with diverse populations.

• English fluency required; Spanish proficiency strongly preferred. Additional languages (e.g., Haitian Creole, Portuguese) are a plus.

• Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize responsibilities, and maintain composure in fast-paced environments.

• Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).

• Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

• Comfortable handling de-escalation and safety interventions.

• Valid driver’s license, active auto insurance, and reliable transportation required.

• Must be eligible to obtain an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card within 90 days of hire.

Working Environment:

• 100% onsite at a 24-hour emergency shelter.

• This role requires flexible scheduling including evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts.

• Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, bending, lifting

Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
