UNICEF Malawi Country Programme (2019-2023) is aligned with the Government of Malawi’s Growth and Development Strategy (MDGS III) and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). The programme supports the Government of Malawi to meet its commitment to respect, protect and fulfil children’s rights in line with international conventions and standards. The country programme is guided by the principles of children’s rights, equity, gender equality, inclusion and resilience, and supports evidence-based, integrative and innovative programming. The vision is that ‘all girls and boys in Malawi, especially the most disadvantaged and deprived, realize their rights’. The programme focuses on: early childhood (parenting, high-impact social services, early stimulation and learning), middle childhood and adolescence (learning, multi-sectoral services, active citizenship), communities (decentralized services and systems, community ownership, social norms), programme effectiveness (monitoring, evaluation, HACT, Innovation, Social Protection and Social Policy and External Communication. The programme is based on ‘leaving no child behind’, realizing ‘rights for all children in Malawi’.

Malawi is disaster prone country periodically affected by natural and man made disasters. Owing to its strategic location in the Southern Africa, significant population movement transits the country, serving as a link between eastern and southern African countries. Evolving climate change and its effects are felt across the different emergency health scenarios. The Health Programme, and more specifically the emergency response in Malawi aims to actively support the government of Malawi in Preparedness, Response, and Recovery of conditions and diseases of emergency health in nature; and as Health Specialist (Emergency) you will be at the forefront of such activities helping save the lives of children, women, and other people in need.

How can you make a difference?

The Malawi Country Office offers an exciting and rewarding career opportunity for you to join our dynamic Health Section team where you will be responsible for the planning, directing, coordination, monitoring, and implementation of emergency preparedness, response, and recovery activities as well as support the section in the overall COVID-19 management and programmatic response; including networking and resource mobilization. In addition, you will be advocating for the rights of children, women, and affected population in emergency health settings; being accountable to the section and UNICEF Country office for all health emergency endeavours and actions. In your role, you will report to the Chief of Health and HIV section.

  1. Health Emergency Preparedness, Response and Recovery by actively engaging government, partners, and donor community for coordination, resource mobilization, and evidence based actions.
  2. Programme development planning, management, monitoring and delivery of results by ensuring international standards for quality of care is met, resources are utilized timely and appropriately for intended purposes, and progress monitored, tracked, and reported by disaggregates
  3. Technical and operational support to programme implementation
  4. Networking and partnership building. Leveraging and building up on existing networks and extending further partnership endeavours for a better learning experiences.
  5. Innovation, knowledge management and capacity building that will contribute towards a better health outcome to children women and affected population

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

  • An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: public health/nutrition, pediatric health, family health, global/international health, epidemiology, or another relevant technical field.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in public health and nutrition as well as emergency preparedness and response which includes disease outbreaks like Ebola and Cholera.
  • Proven experience in health-related programme management cycle is essential.
  • Specific experience on maternal and child health is required.
  • Experience working in a developing country as well as in sub-Saharan Africa is considered as an asset.
  • Relevant experience in a UN system agency or organization is considered as an asset.
  • Experience working in a developing country is considered as a strong asset
  • Background and/or familiarity with emergency is considered as an asset

Technical knowledge and skills:

  • Background and/or familiarity with emergency is considered as an asset.
  • Familiarity with UN IASC cluster approach would be an asset.

Language:

  • Fluency in English, both verbal and written skills is required.
