Result of Service UNEP’s geospatial mapping tool Strata is fit for purpose and technically sound, providing robust data analysis and visualization inputs to integrated assessments of environmental and climate-related security risks.

Work Location Home-based

Expected duration 16 October 2023 - 31 May 2024 (95 days over 7.5 months)

Duties and Responsibilities 1. Support the full-scale development of the geospatial data platform Strata, including through technical reviews and contributions, and monitoring of progress on agreed milestones. 2. Contribute to the scientific/technical development of new features of Strata, including through technical contributions and reviews, and scientific collaboration with implementing partners. Document progress in the scientific development of new features to ensure a transparent process. 3. Support the design and roll-out of a stakeholder/user engagement process for Strata, including the organization and documentation of workshops, testing/training events and consultations. Contribute to broader communication and dissemination of Strata. 4. Contribute substantively, through research, geospatial data analysis and mapping/visualizations, to assessments of environmental and climate security risks in fragile and conflict affected settings.

Qualifications/special skills University degree (Bachelor’s or higher) in geography or earth and environmental data sciences. At least 2 years of relevant work experience in using geographic information systems for mapping, monitoring and analysis. Proven experience in GIS and data analysis training and stakeholder consultation, including the conceptualization of training and process coordination. Proven experience in scientific research and analysis of environmental issues, particularly in fragile and crisis-affected contexts. Prior experience with the UN, especially UNEP, is an advantage. Experience in communications work relating to environmental issues is an advantage.

Languages Fluency in spoken and written English is essential. Knowledge of French or another UN language is an asset.

Additional Information The consultancy requires mastery of the Microsoft Package, ArcGIS, QGIS, SPSS or R, Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, and other relevant software.
