This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Governance Team Leader, the UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

1. Assist the Governance Team on gender political participation (elections, parliament), violence against women, women economic empowerment projects implementation, He/she will support the development of concept notes, terms of reference, and other significant work being develop by the unit;

2. Support the team in the development of key programme national priorities (national gender equality strategy, national plan against gender based violence, national governance strategy) and UNDP gender equality seal;

3. Develop, in collaboration with other team members and key partners (projects, national directorates), the annual work plans of the projects in the field of Governance, especially taking into account gender mainstreaming;

4. Support the team and government in preparing initial drafts of technical advice on gender issues;

5. Support the team in the coordination and monitoring of SDG 5, SDG10 and SDG16 in partnership with the national statistic agency;

6. Monitor budget implementation and programme activity expenditures and perform budget revisions when required;

8. Provide inputs to quarterly reports, donor reports and other reports on outputs, results outputs and outcomes;

9. Support the implementation of the project to strengthen women's leadership, especially for their access to decision-making

10. Participate and support the organization of events and webinars organized by the Governance Team in relation with national counterparts (women local elected, women candidates for elections, victims of gender-based violence;

11. Contribute to building partnerships and resource mobilization strategies in the sector of governance;

12. Provide inputs to resource mobilization strategies, analyze and maintain information and databases;

13. Provide inputs to relevant documentation such as project summaries, conference papers, briefing notes, speeches, and donor profiles;

14. Support inter-agency coordination on gender issues to achieve coherence and alignment of UNDP programmes with other partners;

15. Provide inputs to advocacy, knowledge building and communication efforts;

16. Realize background documents, briefs and presentations related to gender issues;

17. Coordinate and support the organization of campaigns events, trainings, workshops and knowledge products;

18. Consult the existing documentation: newsletters, project documents and reports to gain familiarity and insight into the programs being executed by the governance unit;

19. Participate, if necessary, in the organization of field missions;

20. Perform any other duties that the supervisor deems necessary for the implementation of the Governance pillar activities, especially for gender equality.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

social sciences, human rights, gender/ women’s studies, international development, or a related field

Required experience:

Experience remark:

  • 0-2 years

  • Knowledge of gender and women economic empowerment

  • Knowledge of political governance
  • Knowledge of UN and/or UNDP procedures grant applications and program implementation is desirable
  • Knowledge of Global Fund policies and procedures is desirable
  • Work experience in Africa is desirable

  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Language skills:

  • French(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • English(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.

  • Interpersonal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.

  • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

UN Youth Volunteers should be between 18 and 29 years old throughout the duration of their service.
