Overview

Provide technical guidance on gender equality and inclusion in urban development.

You have:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in human rights, gender equality, or social protection.
  • Experience in climate change or sustainability is desired.
  • Understanding of local context and issues in Niger and related policies.
  • Master's degree in Law, Human Rights, Gender Studies, or related field.
  • Fluency in English and proficiency in French.

Contract

This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Under the overall supervision of the Head of RCO the human rights and gender Officer will be responsible for the following activities: • Review existing policies, and planning instruments to provide recommendations on in-clusion, LNOB and gender equality and inclusion to strengthen urban environment and “ease of living” for disabled, women, children, elderly, and urban poor. • Develop and manage knowledge resources and relevant documentation on how mar-ginalization in policies, planning, resource allocation, climate change and institutional focus affects urban poor and other vulnerable groups. • Develop analytical tools and methodologies for analysis of datasets to prepare policy recommendations and guide project-specific actions for inclusive and sustainable urban development and built-environment in cities. • Provide technical expertise to develop evidence-based knowledge products, general frameworks to promote the principles of “Leave No One Behind”. • Lead and facilitate “People’s Process” and participatory mechanisms • Work on the PSEA subject with the group • Support the UNCT internal coordination structures – Programme Management Team (PMT), Monitoring and Evaluation Team (M&E), Operations Management Team (OMT), and Thematic Group on Gender Equality and Inclusion, and UNCT to establish and/or maintain engagements with relevant stakeholders to promote practices for mainstream-ing inclusion. • Develop concept notes, and support the UNDAF/Cooperation Framework Joint Work Programmes, so as to strengthen integration of gender and inclusion. • Represent the RCO at meetings, workshops, professional events as a subject matter expert and an advocate of institutional good practices. • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as may be required by the RCO in re-sponding to the requests of the respective member states.

Under the direct supervision of the Head of office, Senior Coordination and Strategic Planning Officer Resident Coordination Office the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

• Contribute to RCO’s work with UN Agencies, governmental officials and CSO partners to ensure a rights-based approach in the planning and implementation of country-based initiatives/projects and that the UNCT activities is communicated across differ-ent social media platforms; • Assist the RCO to ensure the integration of gender and disability perspectives and attention to specific women rights, disability and indigenous peoples issues within all UNCT activities; • Contribute to organize seminars, training and lessons learned at national level with stakeholders on human rights, equality and inclusion; • Take part in the implementation of human rights projects; • Assist the RCO in strengthening its communications outreach and development of a communication strategy; • Perform other duties as required and assigned by the of the Head of office, Senior Coordination and Strategic Planning Officer Resident Coordination Office.

The recruited UNV will be based in Niamey and will work in RCO-Niger. In Niger, the climate is harsh, ranging from extremely hot in April and May to dry and cool between November and February. Niamey is the capital of Niger. The candidate could easily find accommodation possibilities in this city. The spontaneous welcome and hospitality of Nigeriens are among the hallmarks of this West African country. Living conditions in Niamey are good, as is access to health services. Vaccination against yellow fever is compulsory and vaccination cards must be presented at the entrance. Vaccines against meningococcal meningitis and hepatitis A and B are also recommended. Basic medicines are available in pharmacies, but it is recommended to bring specific medicines. There are several banks in Niamey and decent clinics, including the United Nations clinic. The security level in Niamey is 3 (moderate) The selected Volunteer must follow from the start of his assignment all mandatory training for all United Nations.
