ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

These jobs are found in Headquarters (HQ), Regional Bureaux (RBs) or Country Offices (COs). In COs job holders report to the Deputy Country Director or the designate, in RBs job holders report to the Regional Food Safety and Quality Officer, and in HQ job holders report to the Food Safety and Quality Chief. Job holders have wide responsibilities and make significant contributions to ensure effective support to food safety and quality initiatives. They provide guidance to junior staff and support their learning and development needs.

JOB PURPOSE:

To lead the implementation of food safety and quality management and/or food product optimisation initiatives within global initiatives. You will be responsible for partnering with the key supply chain functions to ensure an integrated supply chain approach to meeting the food assistance needs of beneficiaries.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

You will:

  • Lead corporate Food Safety and Quality workstreams linked to Programme (Small Holder Farmers, CBT, Commodity vouchers, School Feeding), Food Systems and Nutrition. Act as the focal point for food safety and quality implementation in Programme.
  • Establish and implement protocols and tools relating to food safety and quality and food product optimisation, ensuring alignment with WFP procurement and supply chain strategy, policies and plans;
  • Prepare accurate and timely reports that inform food risk assessment and management, and contribute to a WFP-wide view of food technology activities, enabling informed decision-making and consistency of information presented to stakeholders
  • Implement a consistent food safety and quality assurance management scheme across different operations, lead the updates of the WFP food safety and quality assurance manual, incorporating various Standard of Procedures (SoPs), documents, Guidelines, Policies and Strategies, ensuring the consultations and management approvals are reached;
  • Serve as the focal point for the incorporation of food safety and quality assurance into other WFP manuals from other units and divisions
  • Lead the Food Safety and Quality manual rollout, including training, and communication initiatives and serve as the focal point for questions and issue resolution related to the Manual Implementation
  • Serve as the Food Safety and Quality focal point and lead capacity strengthening initiatives and guidelines liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead additional Food Safety and Quality training initiatives, including material development, scheduling and execution
  • Lead Food Safety and Quality partnerships with academic stakeholders (e.g.: NRI, universities in EA)
  • Lead the initiatives to maintain food safety and quality talent roster and key initiatives with selected universities to seize talent and project opportunities
  • Create and maintain partnerships with academia and technical partners (e.g.: NRI), including contracts, MoUs, meetings and initiatives
  • Others as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND KEY REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

You have:

  • Advanced university degree in Food Technology, Health Sciences, Food Engineering, Food Safety and Quality or other related fields, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or training/courses.

EXPERIENCE:

You have:

Minimum of five (5) years of post-graduate professional work experience including (at least 2 of the following):

  • Implementing Food Safety and Quality systems
  • Working in food research and development or Scientific and Regulatory Affairs
  • Developing and delivering technical training linked to food safety and quality
  • Working in technical food safety and quality partnerships

LANGUAGE:

You have:

  • Fluency (level C) in the English language.
  • Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or Portuguese (A WFP’s working language)

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Mobility is and continues to be, a core contractual requirement in WFP. The selected candidate will be employed on a fixed term as well as a rotational contract with a probationary period of one year.

WFP offers an attractive compensation and benefits package in line with ICSC standards (http://icsc.un.org) including basic salary, post adjustment, relocation entitlement, visa, travel and shipment allowances, 30 days’ annual leave, home leave, an education grant for dependent children, a pension plan, and medical insurance.

The selected candidate will be required to relocate to Rome, Italy to take up this assignment.

The internal title for this position is "Food Technologist P3".
