This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

UNICEF supports the scaling up of formal schooling including for Syrian children and youth, through Back-to-School campaign, provision of temporary learning spaces, construction of prefabricated classrooms and minor school rehabilitation, provision of school supplies, maintenance cost support, and others. For out-of-school children and youth, UNICEF support informal/non-formal education programmes through NGO/CSO and Municipality partnerships. These field-level programme activities need to be closely monitored and followed up to successfully achieve programmatic results and maintain excellent partnerships with the local education stakeholders. This UNV assignment is to provide programmatic support at the field level to the UNICEF Turkiye Country Program, focusing on assessing the education needs of Syrian refugees and host communities and facilitating the implementation of quality and timely education activities in the South-eastern provinces of Turkiye.

In addition to duty station specific vaccine requirements, appointments are subject to confirmation of fully vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the appointment. It does not apply to UN Volunteers who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their contracts.

Under the direct supervision of the Education Specialist in Gaziantep, the UNV Field Education Assistant will undertake the following tasks:

Support to programme development, planning, and execution: •Compile data and information on the UNICEF supported Education Programme activities in the respective assigned province(s) to facilitate preparation of reports, working papers, and presentations. •Support close contact and coordination between UNICEF and the school managements in the province(s) to arrange meetings, workshops and training courses pertaining to programme development. •Support the implementation of communication plans for education related activities as needed.

Support to monitoring and reporting of programme results: •Prepare and maintain records, documents, and control plans for the monitoring of project/programme implementation. •Monitor and report on the implementation of the UNICEF supported Education Programme activities in the respective assigned province(s). •Support monitoring of the implementation of the UNICEF-supported non/informal education activities and early childhood education (ECE) programmes in respected assigned provinces.

Support to resource mobilization: •Support the organization of events, including donors’ site visits for UNICEF-supported activities ensuring proper visibility for UNICEF at the field level. •Support for the preparation of data, information, and relevant figures for the development of donor proposals.

Support to knowledge management: •Organize data and information, prepare, maintain, and share records and documents of the education section for effective programme implementation. •Gather and share data/information as needed in support of improving the processes and daily operations of the section. •Contribute to the preparation of reports, project documents and submissions by providing information, generating, and analyzing reports, preparing tables, and drafting routine sections of documents. •Any other related tasks as may be required or as assigned by the supervisor.

Support to Education Sector Coordination: •Prepare sector coordination meeting. •Draft meeting minutes in timely manner. •Maintain contact and mailing list of the Education Sector. •Assist data collection of education at provincial levels.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: •Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); •Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; •Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; •Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; •Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers; •Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

/at the national and/or international level in education or other relevant programmes. Experience working in the UN or with another international development organization is an asset. •Excellent oral and written skills in English and Turkish; Arabic language skills would be an asset. •Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet. •Excellent drafting, formulation, and reporting skills;
•Good knowledge of Turkish public systems, •Good knowledge of and skills in data collection, •Gender and diversity awareness, •Working experience with and in disadvantaged communities, especially on humanitarian action related issues (preferably in the field of education is an asset). •Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; •Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; •Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; •Sound security awareness; •Have affinity with or interest in children’s rights, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

Turkiye is a unique country and Gaziantep is a unique (humanitarian) operation. It provides for an interesting and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness, as well as more stamina and commitment than elsewhere to make life comfortable and affordable. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions, involving physical hardship and little comfort, are essential.

UN Volunteers are to reside in or relocate to the respective duty station. If locally recruited, they will work from their home residences. If relocated from their original home areas, with the UNV standard relocation assistance, they are to make their own residential arrangements.

A 12-month contract; with subsequent contract extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity, and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment.

Travel to duty station (if applicable) and a Settling-In-Grant will be provided in the event duty station is not within commuting distance from the place of recruitment. A Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities, and normal cost of living expenses. Life, health, and permanent disability insurance are included (health insurance for up to 3 dependents), as well as final repatriation (if applicable) and resettlement allowance for satisfactory service.
