Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Chief of Communications or his/her designated mandated representative(s) and working closely with the Partnerships Team and Programme Sections, the UN Volunteer External Relations Officer will:

• Lead in planning and preparation of materials for donor visits and events and support the planning of strategic high-level donor visits. • Support the ongoing regular communications with donors • Support the development and implementation of effective concepts for engagement with donors and development of resource mobilization advocacy products and documents. • Stay abreast of key developments in the external environment as they affect fundraising and remain up to date with fundraising practices within UNICEF and across the sector. • Support high level meetings and engagements with existing donor and potential donors. • Support the online and physical visibility and acknowledgement of donors and UNICEF in project sites and through UNICEF’s digital platforms • Produce compelling communications content (stories, video, print materials) aimed at donor visibility and resource mobilization efforts. • Assist in integrating UNICEF’s advocacy initiatives with outreach to donors • Assist in monitoring communications requirements for donor reporting. • Support in the strategy development of key flagship programmes that have specific communications and visibility requirements.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

South Sudan is a unique country and a unique (humanitarian) operation. It provides for an interesting and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness, as well as more stamina and commitment than elsewhere to make life comfortable and affordable. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions, involving physical hardship and little comfort, are essential.
