Additional Information Background and Objectives:

The United Nations was founded on the principles of the dignity and worth of the human person, proclaiming the right of everyone to enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms, without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion. In the Charter of the United Nations, it is recognized that diversity, equity, and inclusion bring tangible benefits and efficiencies to the invaluable work of the United Nations, while racism, exclusion and marginalization affect staff morale, undermine solidarity and commitment, and hamper the delivery of mandates.

On 24 January 2022, the Secretary-General shared the Strategic Action Plan on addressing racism and promoting dignity for all in the United Nations Secretariat. One of the recommendations of the Strategic Action Plan is to conduct dialogues on racism in the workplace that enable staff to gain awareness and have honest conversations about the presence of racism within the Organization.

The dialogues are coordinated at the operational level by the Office of the United Nations Ombudsman and Mediation Services (UNOMS). The dialogue model provides a framework using conversation guidelines and carefully considered questions. The goal is to create a brave space for participants to exchange perspectives and experiences relating to racism in the workplace. By sharing their ideas and comments, participants contribute to changing the culture of the United Nations. In addition, the harvest of ideas (without attribution) helps inform the implementation of the Strategic Action Plan in the Organization.

UNOMS is seeking to recruit expert facilitators who have demonstrated their commitment to UN values and to protecting the rights, dignity and inherent worth of all human beings as enshrined in the UN Charter.
