English-Korean Language Interpretation Expert

Result of Service The objective of this individual contractor is to provide English-Korean and Korean-English consecutive interpretation services during meetings on the development of the air quality assessment to ensure effective and efficient communication process among the project partners.

Under the direct supervision by Associate Programme Officer – APCAP, the consultant is required to 1. Provide English-Korean and Korean-English consecutive interpretation services during technical meetings. 2. Provide English-Korean and Korean-English consecutive interpretation services during project partners meeting.

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP’s Asia and the Pacific Office geographically serves 41 countries across the region to promote and implement sustainable development solutions. It assists countries of the region pursue sustainability, particularly in their implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including technical expertise, facilitating access to finance, undertaking cutting-edge science-policy assessments, offering advisory services and strengthening laws, policies, management and governance. UNEP works with national and local authorities, civil society, other UN organizations, research institutions and the private sector to catalyze the efficient use of the region’s natural assets and reduce the degradation of the environment.

The project “Beating air pollution in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi through evidence-based solutions” aims to assess efforts in the Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi to improve air quality in the last fifteen years and to share these experiences to other cities in the region through the United Nations Environment Assembly and the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies. Specifically, it aims to: (a) increase understanding and awareness on the status of air pollution issue, including sources of air pollution, and on the actions being taken by relevant stakeholders to address this issue; (b) improve future policy action to reduce air pollution with better understanding of the effectiveness of policies and measures in place; and (c) identify good practices to inspire other cities and countries to beat air pollution.

A major component of this project is to develop an assessment of air quality actions in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi which is supported by Stockholm Environment Institute as lead author, and the Seoul Institute, Incheon Institute, Gyeonggi Research Institute as co-lead authors. Technical partners meetings are organized every two to three weeks among the authors and UNEP to discuss the progress of the modeling, analysis and review of the sectoral data and assessment results, and any other technical concerns regarding the assessment process.

The purpose of the consultancy: The project seek to recruit an individual contractor to provide professional English-Korean and Korean-English interpretation services during the technical meetings on the development of the air quality assessment.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s or higher) in communication, English language and other relevant field, and equivalent academic qualifications, or equivalent work experience. Experience: - At least 5 years of professional experience in the interpretation sector. - Demonstrated interpretation experience in air pollution, environment management, and related fields. - Experience in performing consecutive interpretation in formal settings (conferences, meetings, trainings, etc.). - Working experience in a multicultural environment including United Nations desirable. Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English and fluency in Korean is required.
