Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in UNAMID Engineering Section, El Fasher. The Engineering Technician at this level reports to the Chief Engineer through the Environmental Engineer.

Responsibilities Operations - Install, service, maintain and repair, in compliance with recognized standards and regulations pertaining to safety and installation codes of all solid waste management systems - Diagnose technical faults and carry-out remedy for malfunctioning or defective waste management system. - Operate a wide variety of waste management equipment including incinerators and bulb crushers - Implement various methods such as incineration, neutralization and encapsulation that comply with local and international standards for the safe disposal of various hazardous materials and chemicals. - Decommission and conduct maintenance services on solid waste equipment earmark for transfer to other Peacekeeping Missions. - Perform technical or other assessments of waste management facilities and prepare technical fault reports. - Apply and ensure adherence to safety programs related to the safe operation of various solid waste management equipment and disposal of hazardous chemicals( both solid and liquid). - Conducting in-house training to tradesmen and artisans on the imaging technical skills in the installation of specialized equipment, fault finding and remedy. - Inspect and report on construction project work and maintenance work carried out either by contractors or tradesmen and staff under supervision and ensure proper utilization of available resources. - Review and report on status of solid waste management contracts to facilitate early communication by Procurement Section and Contract Management Unit to contractors on the contract termination process. - Record and report to the Chief of Unit data on solid waste (hazardous and non-hazardous) disposal activities. - Read and interpret specifications and technical drawings, schedules, manuals for construction projects, installations and upgrade repair of waste management infrastructure. - Resolve problems; inspect quality of work and work performance.

Administration - Maintain records relating to inventories, task orders and general correspondence. - Prepare bills of quantities and costing for waste management projects. - Assist in carrying out technical assessments of existing waste management facilities - Assist in the preparation of cost estimates for waste management projects and maintenance programmes. - Assist in technically evaluating bids and proposals for waste disposal/management projects. - Provide inputs periodically for assessment of performance levels of assigned local and International staff. - Alert the Supervisor of Unit / Section of unusual occurrence and/or damage that have taken place or are likely to occur. - Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the Section Chief.

Competencies Professionalism: Demonstrated experience as regards utilization, maintenance, and upkeep of the wide range of Electrical equipment and systems and anticipate the next steps pertaining to electrical plans and requirements in the field mission. Ability to maintain accurate and specific records and inventories. Demonstrated ability to ensure continuous and uninterrupted power to camps and other mission premises on a 24/7 basis. Technological Awareness: Good electrical management skills and awareness of the latest technology related to the electrical field, including proficiency in fault finding using applicable test instruments; familiarity with and ability to use advanced electrical tools and HVAC installations in a safe and efficient manner; ability to correctly interpret and assess diagnostic test results, faults or deficiencies and to provide the necessary remedial actions in an efficient and timely manner; computer literate and familiarity with word-processing, database and other project reporting software; demonstrates initiative and willingness to learn new skills to keep abreast of the rapid advances in technology. Keeps abreast of available technology; Understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office; Actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; Shows willingness to learn new technology.

Education High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of high school. Technical Diploma obtained either from a Technical College/Trade/Vocational School or through an accepted national apprenticeship program; recognized and valid license to repair, maintain, troubleshoot.

Work Experience At least 6 years of practical work experience in environmental engineering, facilities maintenance or related fields is required. Familiarity with waste management equipment and disposal facilities in the United Nations or international peacekeeping mission experience is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
