Additional Information Organizational setting

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, UNDRR has over 100 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices.

UNDRR’s New York Liaison Office provides policy advice and support to Member States and works closely with United Nations system partners and non-governmental stakeholders to advance disaster risk reduction and Sendai Framework implementation. The Office promotes policy coherence across disaster risk reduction, climate action, sustainable development, and financing for development through intergovernmental deliberations and policy decisions taken primarily at the General Assembly and Economic and Social Council. This includes promoting the integration of disaster risk reduction and coherence with the Sendai Framework in the development and implementation of major intergovernmental agreements, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development, the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Istanbul Programme of Action for Least Developed Countries, the Vienna Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries and the Samoa Pathway for Small Island Developing States, to ensure their implementation benefits from and contributes to reducing disaster risk.

To advance the disaster risk reduction agenda within the intergovernmental policy-setting arena in New York, this work requires drafting a variety of written outputs, such as sections of and inputs to reports of the Secretary-General, talking points and speeches, readouts and synopses of intergovernmental meetings, engagement strategies, and website content. It is critical that these written pieces are forward-looking and concise and provide concrete policy recommendations for Member States as well as clear actions for UNDRR to take forward.
