Contract
This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.
In the context of WHO’s 13th General Program of Work (GPW) and its triple-billion strategy, the UNV will support communications highlighting the impact of donors at county level. The Afghanistan Country Office has over 30 donor-funded projects and counting. As such, donor visibility is key to ensuring partners see a great deal of return on their investment and are celebrated along the way. To this end, key deliverables include the accurate and timely production and dissemination of high-quality public information products which highlight WHO work and donors’ impact on the ground, promoting achievements and results of key public health initiatives, and optimizing networking opportunities. The areas of work that can be covered include visibility work across different programmatic programs, e.g., communicable and non-communicable diseases, healthier populations, health systems and information, emergency preparedness and response, data collection and management, family and reproductive health, program support, and administration.
Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the External Relations and Partnership team Lead, the UN Volunteer will: • Liaise with program leads and technical officers to identify programs/projects funded by donors and develop quality communication products highlighting donor impact and achievements. • With the coms unit -- produce public information materials such as human-interest stories, press releases, facts sheets, notes for the media, social media posts, and other material on donor-related activities, events, products, and issues for use by the print, electronic and online media. • Collaborate with all relevant actors, including UN agencies, Non-State Actors, and other partners, to identify and create communication opportunities on donor visibility. • With communication unit, draft social media content acknowledging funding and celebrating donors’ impact, track performance of digital communications, and guide to best digital strategy. • With communication unit, organize photographic shoots, interviews, and filming opportunities to support high visibility of donor impact through various public platforms. • Organize donor visits in provinces and/or field projects to collect quality audio-visual content. • Monitor donor-related coverage and programs and provide regular reports and plans for optimal visibility. • Prepare communication and advocacy products and statements to convince and encourage donors to fund the overall health sector response rapidly. • Perform any other communications-related duties, as required by the direct and functional supervisor. • Contribute to the development of shared practices, standards and tools across WHO EMR and in alignment with global WHO branding and policies in the relevant area of expertise.
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers program mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:
• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that
mark International Volunteer Day).
• Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country.
• Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
• Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers.
• Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Afghanistan is a unique country and WHO is a unique (humanitarian) operation. It provides for an interesting and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness, as well as more stamina and commitment than elsewhere to make life comfortable and affordable. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions, involving physical hardship and little comfort, are essential.
The position is based in Kabul. WHO will facilitate accommodation for IUNV within UNOCA.
