Background & Summary

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. The IRC's Global Board Engagement unit is looking for a progressive, experienced leader to join our committed team. This critical unit is directly responsible for all Board practices, engagement, and strategy for the Board of Directors and Advisors for IRC, Inc. and collaborates with the Executive Directors of the national offices to align and optimize their local Board engagement efforts.

Job Overview

The Director, Global Board Strategy and Engagement is responsible for the robust engagement and relationship management of IRC’s International Boards of Directors and Advisors. The Director will supervise the Associate Director, Global Board Engagement, and the Global Board Communications Specialist, and works in partnership with other key senior internal collaborators, including Executive Directors of IRC’s national offices and relevant fundraising staff.

Major Responsibilities

Board and Advisor Strategy (40%)

- Develop, implement, and refine international Board engagement strategy by engaging significant internal support across all departments and external support from the US, UK, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, South Korea, and future IRC global Boards - Conceptualize and drive the implementation of strategic objectives that rely on IRC’s Global Boards to achieve cross-organizational goals - Ensure the quality and consistency of the experience of all Board members and Advisors globally, and engage independently with global Board members and Advisors to build and develop more meaningful relationships

Board and Advisor Giving (30%)

- Collaborate with High Value fundraising staff and other senior leaders to increase global Board and Advisor giving, support global Board expansion plans, and build customized donor strategies for all Board members and Advisors - Further develop relationships with High Value fundraising staff and an understanding of their strategies to optimize opportunities for Board and Advisor support - Lead fundraising and engagement strategy for IRC’s flagship Global Rescue Dinner event across all High Value fundraising teams - Partner with Strategic Events, Communications, High Value fundraising teams, and other staff to successfully carry out the Global Rescue Dinner event

Board and Advisor Governance (20%)

- Ensure efficient and proper functioning of US Board governance responsibilities - Work with the Executive Directors of IRC’s national offices to deepen formal and informal governance relationships between IRC’s global Boards - Lead all aspects of evaluation and monitoring to assess the effectiveness of structures, membership, and responsibilities of the US Board sub-committees - Identify and implement opportunities for relevant sub-committee internal collaboration - Collaborate with General Counsel to ensure that all risk associated with governance is identified and has strong mitigation strategies

Team Management (10%)

- Lead a team of two staff members based in New York to deliver their objectives effectively, develop professionally, and be fulfilled in their roles - Build relationships with Board engagement teams in the UK, Germany, and Sweden, and be familiar with governance in Belgium, South Korea, and other locations as relevant.

Work Experience

· 12+ years of increasingly senior and leadership positions in fundraising, board management, and/or strategy roles

· Significant experience developing high-touch relationships with sophisticated major donors, working with high-profile Boards and Board leadership, and influencing C-level and senior management colleagues

· Successful record of managing and leading teams, inspiring change, and focusing on crafting solutions

· Shown track record of delivering on ambitious, sophisticated, and critical initiatives with timely and efficient performance metrics

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

· Excellent communicator in written and verbal form with experience influencing critical partners

· Outstanding versatility and flexibility, with a high degree of comfort changing and refining priorities and targets and working across different time zones, cultures, and business practices

· Strong attention to detail and ability to identify and address nuanced business needs

· Experience and comfort with data analysis and budget management

· BA degree in International Relations or equivalent
