Education Cannot Wait (ECW) is the United Nations global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises. We support quality education outcomes for refugee, internally displaced and other crisis-affected girls and boys, so no one is left behind. ECW works through the multilateral system to both increase the speed of responses in crises and connect immediate relief and longer-term interventions through multi-year programming. ECW works in close partnership with governments, public and private donors, UN agencies, civil society organizations, and other humanitarian and development aid actors to increase efficiencies and end siloed responses. ECW urgently appeals to public and private sector donors for expanded support to reach even more vulnerable children and youth. ECW is a UNICEF hosted fund, administered under UNICEF’s financial, human resources and administrative rules and regulations; operations are run by the Fund’s own independent governance structure. The ECW Secretariat based in New York is scaling up its operations in line with its 2023-2026 Strategic Plan and major upcoming High-Level Financing Conference and subsequent 3-year replenishment period, and needs to strengthen its overall communication, public advocacy and fundraising efforts. Media outreach, content production, advocacy and digital engagement are to play an important role in positioning ECW’s brand as a new breakthrough global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, expanding financial and political commitments and engagement around education in emergencies and disseminating knowledge of best practices in the field. To support this work, ECW needs to engage a qualified P3 Digital Media Specialist. The incumbent of this position will report to ECW's Chief of Advocacy/Communications with the responsibility to build strong digital outreach, advocacy and communications to advance ECW’s global #222MillionDreams in line of its current Strategic Plan and advocating for those left furthest behind. This includes, providing support for the planning, development and implementation of ECW’s digital communication strategy, with a focus on social media management, graphic design, multimedia production, campaign implementation, website maintenance and development, event and high-level mission coverage, engagement with global champions, partners, and special missions/events. All of this, while supporting the daily tasks/needs of the ECW Advocacy and Communications section and ECW’s Executive Director.

Purpose of the job

The ECW Secretariat is scaling up its operations and concurrently needs to strengthen its overall communication, media outreach and public advocacy in support of fundraising efforts. Content production and digital engagement are to play an important role in positioning ECW’s brand as a breakthrough global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, expanding financial and political commitments and engagement around education in emergencies and disseminating knowledge of best practices in the field. In response to EWC’s new Strategic Plan, the Fund seeks to create awareness and call for funding with substantial advocacy and communication across digital media channels, traditional communication and other media to engage key stakeholders and position ECW across the globe within the public and private sectors. Effective advocacy and communication through digital media channels and traditional media, will allow ECW to continuing expanding its outreach and the impact of its brand with individuals or groups, as well as brands and organizations, thus creating valuable relationships with both online and offline stakeholders. Strong digital advocacy/communication with implementing partners and potential donors across the globe will enable the Fund to amplify messages from strategic partners and close the education in emergencies and protracted crises funding gap.

Key functions, accountabilities and related duties/tasks:

1. ECW's Digital/Social Media management Ensure ECW’s digital/social media channels are up to date, following applicable corporate guidelines and considering ECW’s branding. Identify key digital influencers, potential global champions and partners that can help amplify ECW's voice and engage with them on regular basis through digital communication. Ensure all ECW digital media channels and platforms are “on message”. Support online reputation management and implement effective communication during crisis. Ensure timely distribution, dissemination and cross-promotion of ECW’s digital content. Design and implement online marketing plans for ECW’s social media: Twitter, Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and Flickr.

2. Design and implementation of Global Social Media Campaigns Create, design and manage social media campaigns as requested. Package related campaigns and inputs to share with relevant partners. Continue expanding ECW’s flagship campaing #222MillionDreams. Monitor campaings and deliver key results.

3. Content Production Create new, unique, on-brand and curated content for ECW’s social channels Twitter, Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and Flickr. Explore and expand ECW’s social media potential channels. Produce and/or design advocacy and communication materials (e.g. videos, infographics, photo galleries, social media packages, factsheets, presentations, reports, etc.) for digital and physical platforms, promotion materials, etc. under ECW’s branding guidelines and style. Graphic design for social media cards, factsheets, publications, infographics, and other ECW communication materials, consistent with ECW branding guidelines. Proficient experience: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other graphic design software. Support the translation and production of ECW’s communication and advocacy products and materials into relevant UN official languages. Draft and edit content for social media that meet ECW standards. Establish and maintain an up-to-date ECW media assets library including photographs, video/audio-visual materials. Share relevant material with ECW’s internal and external partners on demand.

4. Video and Photo Editing and Production Produce short, professional advocacy and social media videos to promote ECW’s high-level missions, events, international days, campaigns, launches, etc. Principal videographer/editor for videos developed by ECW partners, interviews, etc. Pre- and post-production of videos to ensure high-quality final products. Principal editor on longer-form ECW video/documentaries. Principal editor and producer of high-quality photos for advocacy use. Proficient experience in: Adobe Premier, Adobe AfterEffects, Final Cut and other video editing platforms.

5. Website Administration Develop, upload and maintain content on ECW’s website in a timely manner. Drupal9, Drupal web security and core updates experience is highly desirable. Develop landing pages and microsites for ECW campaigns in short-time frames. Support optimization of design & performance, in line with applicable digital governance standards. Ensure relevant documentation and info is accessible to ECW’s partners/ grantees. Maintain website content management system. Maintain web hosting, serving as point person with web hosting and maintenance company and support work to revamp ECW global website. Principal web administrator for ECW.

6. Global Champions, Partners and Special Events Help organize and generate public support for special events and activities to promote ECW goals. Assist in developing and maintaining close collaboration with groups and organizations whose support is essential to the achievement of advocacy and communication objectives. Maintain and update ECW contact lists/database. Support the visibility of ECW constituents, champions, donors, partners and other special interest groups. Support the organization of ECW special, high-level events and high-level missions, including preparing information materials, assisting in the planning, logistics and administrative arrangements, and ensuring digital communication when required.

Minimum Requirements

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in n communication, graphic design, visual arts, and humanities or another media-oriented relevant field or discipline is required.
    • *A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience at the national and international levels in digital communication with a humanitarian or development aid organization, including managing social media and digital platforms.
  • Extensive and proven knowledge and expertise in using digital media software including Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects In-Design, Lightroom, and Photoshop) are mandatory.
  • Advanced skills in graphic design, photo editing, and video production are mandatory. Proven experience in using content management systems (e.g. Drupal and Wordpress) are highly desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance. Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station, which will be facilitated by UNICEF, is required for IP positions. Appointments are also subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid). Government employees that are considered for employment with UNICEF are normally required to resign from their government before taking up an assignment with UNICEF. UNICEF reserves the right to withdraw an offer of appointment, without compensation, if a visa or medical clearance is not obtained, or necessary inoculation requirements are not met, within a reasonable period for any reason.
