This position resides within the Digital Strategy Section (DSS), as part of the Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (GCA) and reports to the Global Parenting Hub Lead. The Digital Strategy Section manages all global digital channels and digital communications for UNICEF, including unicef.org in 5 UN languages and global social media channels, global digital marketing and implementation of formal UNICEF digital partnerships. The Section is also responsible for the building, management and maintenance of global website properties, including country and regional office support for digital transformation, governance and capacity building.

How can you make a difference?

As part of GCA’s Digital First strategy and a key component of UNICEF’s Digital Transformation change strategy for 2022-2025. The post will engage parents and caregivers on the importance of nurturing caregiving and help position UNICEF and the website as a leading online reference that parents can trust.

Under the guidance of the Global Parenting Hub Lead this position is responsible for researching, writing and editing content, using keyword research and digital analytics tools to develop and optimize high-performing content and help grow UNICEF’s Parenting audience.

The position plays a key role in enabling local parenting hubs and initiatives driven by UNICEF’s network of 190+ Country Offices, through providing guidance and global parenting content for local adaptation.

The role works closely with colleagues in the Paid Marketing team to support the running and optimization of paid advertising on Google, Meta and other platforms promoting global parenting content.

The position also supports the advancement of GCA’s Global Advocacy Priorities and promotes the use of new technologies and innovative approaches.

1. Content:

  • Research, write, edit and produce engaging and practical content for UNICEF Parenting that responds to the needs of parents and caregivers, in line with UNICEF’s global brand and editorial standards.
  • Collaborate with internal partners as part of the editorial process, including Programme review and fact check, to ensure content is factually accurate and in line with UNICEF’s global policies.
  • Support the development and maintenance of a pool of external experts and contributors, including writers and illustrators, ensuring work is done on time and to a high standard.
  • Conduct keyword research and develop content plans for targeting key parent-related terms. Monitor organic search traffic through ongoing audits and keyword research, tracking keyword positions and optimizing content. Contribute to development of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) workflows and best practices to benefit the wider UNICEF.org team.

2. Dissemination and Engagement:

  • Contribute to organic and paid promotion of global parenting content.
  • Liaise with the Paid Marketing team to support the development and optimization of advertising on platforms including Google and Meta.
  • Liaise with the Social Editorial team to support the promotion of global parenting content on UNICEF’s global social media channels.

3. Digital Analytics and Insights:

  • Work closely with the Digital Intelligence team to monitor digital analytics on UNICEF Parenting, including the development of baselines and benchmarks.
  • Conduct digital analytics reports to monitor content performance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Gather and analyze user feedback and insights to inform editorial and UX decisions, including A/B tests. Identify opportunities for innovation, testing and learning to reach and engage larger audiences.
  • Stay abreast of research into new technological developments in digital world.

4. Field Support:

  • Enable UNICEF Regional and Country Office parenting initiatives.
  • Upload content files and maintain internal SharePoint site for use by UNICEF’s Regional and Country Offices.
  • Support capacity building activities related to UNICEF Parenting for UNICEF Regional and Country Offices, including developing guidance materials and participating in webinar trainings.
  • Monitor UNICEF Regional and Country Office uptake of global parenting content. Contribute to team efficiency through maintaining a content calendar and ensuring an up-to-date filing system of drafts and reviews, as well as identifying opportunities to improve.

5. Other:

  • Perform other digital communication duties at the P2 level as required, as well as fill in for other colleagues when required.
  • Undertake other duties assigned by supervisor.

Impact of Results:

The Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (DGCA) contributes to the positioning of UNICEF as a global leader of parenting information online, supporting caregivers to provide their children with nurturing caregiving, increasing UNICEF’s visibility among this audience, and enabling local parenting initiatives to run by UNICEF Country Offices around the world.​

More broadly, DGCA designs and implements clear, innovative, and effective digital and social media engagement strategies and partnerships for relevant communication priorities and Global Advocacy Priorities to raise awareness of children’s rights in the public domain, strengthen political will in support of UNICEF's mission and objectives, and enhance the organization’s credibility and brand.

GCA remains abreast of latest developments and trends in digital and social media strategies, incorporating tactics into strategic approaches with the aim of reaching established key performance indicators. DGCA has a clear path to achieving the ambitious goal of 200 million digital supporters by end of 2025. This will contribute to the full realization of the objectives of the Global Communication and Public Advocacy Strategy.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

  • University degree in Communications, Journalism, Digital Media, International Relations or related fields

Experience:

  • Minimum two years of progressively responsible professional work experience in the field of online media and digital communications.
  • Knowledge of digital communications, digital marketing and civic engagement.
  • At least 1 year working within an international organization preferred.
  • Strong ability to write and edit external communication materials in English; ability to express ideas and concepts clearly and concisely in written and oral form.
  • Fluency in issues, trends and evolving practices related to parenting.
  • Experience using software and applications relevant to the position, including website management tools, SEO tools and analytics platforms is required.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in digital communication strategy and engagement and knowledge of best-in-class digital media platforms.
  • Good understanding of world affairs, current events and the need for development issues.
  • Knowledge of United Nations, development organizations or NGOs are highly desirable.
  • Detail-oriented, creative, able to work efficiently under tight deadlines.
  • Experience writing about parenting and early childhood development topics is required.

Language:

  • Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of a second United Nations language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is highly desirable
