Duties and Responsibilities

This internship is for a minimum 3 and a maximum of 6 months at the United Nations premise in New York, USA. The internship is designed to be flexible, i.e., in-person, remote or hybrid. Full-time: 35 hours per week. Part-time: 20 hours per week. The duration and modality can be adjusted on request of the successful candidate. We seek motivated interns to support the work of the United Nations Operations and Crisis Centre (UNOCC). The UNOCC is a multi-party entity reporting to the Under-Secretary-General (USG) for Policy in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG), and on peacekeeping matters to the USG for Peace Operations in the Department of Peace Operations. The UNOCC supports UN senior leadership decision-making through the delivery of situational awareness, cross-pillar analytics, preventive engagement, and crisis and risk management. Interns report to full-time professional staff in the UNOCC Data Team and support pipeline and data warehouse workstream. Related tasks include: - - Build, test, troubleshoot and maintain Python data pipelines. - Write Python scripts to gather data from UN internal and external sources (e.g., web scraping, APIs, database connections) and harmonize disparate datasets into a common, unified schema (e.g., Pandas, Numpy, SQLalchemy). - Clean and transform raw data (e.g., JSON, CSV, EXCEL, PDF) into tabular, aggregated formats. - Setup automatic synchronization between data sources and the UNOCC data warehouse using Azure Containers and Azure Functions. - Make up-to-date, quality-checked and reliable data easier available for UNOCC analysis processes (e.g., PowerBI dashboards, or think-cell data templates in Excel and PowerPoint connected to data warehouse). - Collaborate with analysts to understand data needs and fix and improve existing pipelines. - Investigate and identify novel data sources that can inform crisis analytics and decision-making.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). The field of study must be closely related to the type of internship. This includes studies in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Management, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
