Duties and Responsibilities Background

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of disaster reduction and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in socio-economic and humanitarian fields. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, UNDRR has around 100 staff located in its Headquaters (HQ) in Geneva, Switzerland, and 5 regional offices and other field presences.

Specifically, UNDRR coordinates international efforts in disaster risk reduction, and guides, monitors and reports on the progress of the implementation of the international strategy for disaster reduction, now the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), 2015-2030; campaigns to create global awareness of disaster risk reduction benefits and empower people to reduce their vulnerability to hazards; advocates for greater investments in DRR to protect people's lives and assets, and for increased and informed participation of men and women of all stakeholder groups in reducing disaster risk; and informs and connects people by providing practical services and tools such as Prevention Web, publications on good practices, and by leading the preparation of the Global Assessment Report on DRR and the organization of the Regional Platform (RP) for DRR.

Duties and Responsibilities

The individual contractor will develop and implement attractive digital campaigns for the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) and World Tsunamis Awareness Day (WTAD) 2022 with a focus on target G on early warning systems as well as support other campaigns of the regional and global office.

The following activities are foreseen:

- Create digital and social media content and posts.

- Social media channels daily monitoring and strategic planning of social media content (Facebook, twitter and LinkedIn).

- Create and adapt digital content for specific campaigns (IDDRR, WTAD, CREWS, Indigenous people, climate change, and others) to be promoted on social media channels, web pages and newsletters.

- Carry out live coverage of events to create digital content for web page and social media.

- Prepare layout for social media flyers and posts.

- Translation (English-Spanish) and support of social media content and web pages provided by HQ.

- Prepare content for web pages.

- Support live Q&A events on social media.

- Support the preparation of presentations and other digital content (SPARK and PowerPoint).

- Other activities as requested by the communications department.

Qualifications/special skills Skills: - Excellent writing and communication skills is required;

  • A methodical working style is required;

  • Concentration, accuracy and great attention to detail is required;

  • Ability to work to tight deadlines is required;

  • High creativity with the ability to identify the target audience and create a digital campaign that is engaging, informative and motivational is desirable;

  • Good in statistical analysis and research is desirable;

  • Knowledge of disaster risk reduction is desirable;

  • Self-motivation is desirable Academic Qualifications: A first level university degree is required. Although this area of work is open to all graduates, a first level university degree in the following subjects may increase your chances: marketing, digital communication, and communications. Experience: - At least 1-year experience in digital campaign and social media management is required.

  • Experience in the Americas and the Caribbean is desirable.

  • Experience with the United Nations is desirable. Language: Fluency in English and Spanish is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
