Contract
This is a UNV contract. More about UNV contracts.
The UNDP Bangkok Hub for Asia and the Pacific (BRH) Governance Team maintains a living mapping of local governance and local development projects across the Asia-Pacific region. This mapping covers currently over 166 projects across 27 countries, capturing data on thematic focus areas, SDG alignment, intervention types, donor partnerships, budgets, project status, and geographic coverage. The mapping currently exists as an Excel workbook and needs to be transformed into an interactive, web-accessible visualization to support programme oversight, knowledge sharing, and evidence-based decision-making. The Online Volunteer will develop a Power BI dashboard that enables users to explore the data through interactive maps, filters, and charts, and will configure it for embedding on the UNDP website. This contributes directly to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) by strengthening transparent and accountable governance programming, and to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by enhancing coordination and visibility of development interventions across the region, as well as to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
We are looking for one experienced Online Volunteer who, under the supervision of the BRH Governance Team, will support the development of an interactive Power BI dashboard to visualize the mapping of local governance and local development projects across Asia and the Pacific.
The mapping currently exists as an Excel workbook containing 166+ projects with data on thematic focus areas, SDG alignment, intervention types, donor information, budgets, and geographic coverage.
More specifically, the Online Volunteer is asked to:
- Review and clean the source Excel mapping file in coordination with the BRH Governance Team, and structure the data into a Power BI-optimized model with appropriate table relationships.
- Design and develop an interactive Power BI report/dashboard including a geographic map visualization, filter panels and slicers (country, status, thematic focus, SDGs, donors, budget), summary statistics, and detailed project drill-through pages.
- Ensure the dashboard is visually aligned with UNDP branding guidelines which will be provided, with cross-filtering enabled so that selections in one visual dynamically update all others.
- Produce a completed report on Power BI, generate and provide the embed code for website integration, and share the final file (.pbix).
- Draft a brief user guide (max. 4 pages) covering how to update source data and refresh the report, and conduct a handover session.
Participate in regular online check-ins (approx. 30 minutes per week) to discuss progress, clarify open questions and share challenges. An initial onboarding call (60 minutes) will be held to provide instructions and context before the assignment begins.
Candidates should have demonstrated experience building interactive dashboards and reports in Microsoft Power BI, including publishing reports to the Power BI, generating embed codes, and integrating them into websites.
- Experience with publishing and embedding Power BI reports for web audiences is essential.
- Shortlisted candidates will be required to share examples or links to previously completed Power BI dashboards as part of their application. Candidates may include links directly in the motivation statement for consideration.
- Strong data visualization and design skills, along with working knowledge of Excel data preparation, are required.
- Familiarity with UNDP or international development project data and branding guidelines is considered an asset.
- A degree in data analytics, information systems, computer science, or a related field is desirable.
