Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, the empowerment of women, and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action, and peace and security.

The Policy, Programme and Intergovernmental Division develops and implements the UN Women programme of work on analysis, research and knowledge management that provides the evidence base for the advice and guidance UN Women provides to the intergovernmental process, the UN system, and to UN Women staff working at country and regional level on issues of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The Peace, Security and Resilience Section of the Policy, Programme and Intergovernmental Division supports UN Women to fulfill its coordination mandate in the area of peace and security, UN system efforts to promote improved implementation, and monitoring and reporting of global commitments on Women, Peace and Security, including as set out in the Beijing Platform for Action and in Security Council resolutions, relevant Statements by the President of the Security Council, as well as related accountability frameworks established by the UN system.

Reporting to the Participation Policy Specialist, UN Women seeks to recruit an experienced Research, Data, and Information Management consultant with expertise in women, peace, and security to provide technical insights, research, and collect data on women’s participation in peace processes. The consultant will support the development of the Peace Processes Tracker, a tool to monitor trends across a set of indicators tracking women’s participation in peace processes, the gender responsiveness of peace agreements, and their implementation. The Tool will be populated through a data collection survey shared with UN partners, regional organizations, academia, research institutions, and third-party member states. The consultant will support the piloting of the tool and collection of data from 2020 – to-date, formalization of partnerships, and collection of case studies on women leading peace initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conduct a mapping of available and relevant data from institutions, organizations, and other external actors working on women’s participation in peace processes, which can inform the Tracker, its partnerships and data collection plan.
  2. Support the formalization of partnerships with institutions and organizations collecting data relevant to women’s participation in peace processes.
  3. Review and strengthen the methodology and data collection instruments of the Tracker, including integrating inputs from the PSR colleagues, experts and partners on the initiative.
  4. Compile a data set for selected indicators on women’s participation in peace processes from 2020 – to-date.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in social science fields such as international development studies, gender/women’s studies, conflict studies, data analysis, statistics, etc.

  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience carrying out research and analysis on women, peace, and security (WPS) or related area

  • A first-level university degree, in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Experience and expertise in data collection and analysis, especially large datasets.
  • Proven record of in-depth research using quantitative and/or qualitative research methods, particularly in relation to gender.
  • Computer skills, statistics, internet communication, and command of MS Office
