In the year 1997, the Palestinian National Authority represented by His Highness Mr. Yasser Arafat signed an establishment agreement with The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to establish a Liaison office in Ramallah. The office was located in the centre of Ramallah having the key staff to ensure the smooth operation and functioning of the main sectors (Education and Higher Education, Culture and Cultural Heritage, Social and Human Sciences, Natural Sciences and Media).

As a member of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Palestine the office contributes to the overall efforts of the UN system in continuously developing programmes and operations in line with government's priorities and in collaboration with all relevant partners, taking into account the peculiar context and needs in Palestine. UNESCO is the Technical Advisor to the Ministries of Education and Highyer Education and Scientific Research as well as to the ministries of Culture and Tourism and Antiquities within the framework of the Local Aid Coordination's Education and Culture and Tourism Sectors Working Groups respectively.

Under the direct supervision of the UNESCO Head of Office and the Head of the Culture Unit, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: •Support the Culture Unit in the planning of programmes and projects. •Support the implementation of ongoing projects and activities. •Assist in providing input on thematic, programmatic and planning of CLT unit programmes and projects, as requested. •Assist in developing project proposals and help in resource mobilization activities. •Assist in providing trainings and in implementing capacity building activities in the field of culture. •Prepare reports, briefings and updates as requested. •Contribute to prepare communication, promotional and visibility materials in support of the ongoing projects and activities. •Perform any other related duty requested by the supervisor. •Assist in resource mobilization and partnership efforts.

•3 years of experience in in the field of culture preferably one of which at an international level. •Previous experience as a volunteer in the culture sector, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) is highly desired; •Experience in designing, managing and implementing programmes and projects related to Culture •Knowledge of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and experience in the UNESCO Culture Conventions (Especially 1972, 2003, and 2005) •Excellent written and oral communication skills, high level of drafting skills. •Proven experience in producing quality reports and knowledge material, a special attention will be given to applicants who have published material on culture (including audio, visual, written…etc.). •Good knowledge of the regional geopolitical context. •Ability to maintain effective working relationships in a multi-cultural environment. •Relevant experience in the United Nations system or other multilateral organizations. •Excellent coordination and interpersonal skills.

The contract lasts for the period indicated above with possibility of extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment. A UN Volunteer receives a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) per month and is paid at the end of each month to cover housing, utilities, transportation, communications and other basic needs. The VLA can be computed by applying the Post-Adjustment Multiplier (PAM) to the VLA base rate of US$1,682. The VLA base rate is a global rate, while the PAM is country-specific and fluctuates on a monthly basis according to the cost of living. This method ensures that international UN Volunteers have comparable purchasing power at all duty stations irrespective of varying costs of living. The PAM is established by the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) and is published at the beginning of every month on the ICSC website http://icsc.un.org. In non-family duty stations that belong to hardship categories D or E, as classified by the ICSC, international UN Volunteers receive a Well-Being Differential (WBD) on a monthly basis. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are provided a settling-in-grant (SIG) at the start of the assignment (if the volunteer did not reside in the duty station for at least 6 months prior to taking up the assignment) and also in the event of a permanent reassignment to another duty station. UNV provides life, health, permanent disability insurances as well as assignment travel, annual leave, full integration in the UN security framework (including residential security reimbursements). UN Volunteers are paid Daily Subsistence Allowance at the UN rate for official travels, flight tickets for the final repatriation travel (if applicable). A resettlement allowance is paid for satisfactory service at the end of the assignment. UNV will provide, together with the offer of assignment, a copy of the Conditions of Service, including Code of conduct, to the successful candidate.
