Dohuk, a city located in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, has a population of 1.5 million people. It is home to a multi-cultural population including many who were displaced from their homes by ISIL in 2014. The closest airport is in Erbil, which is two hours away by car. Dohuk is one of the safest cities in Iraq and provides a comfortable standard of living. Staff live in private accommodation which has been cleared by UN Security. There’s many supermarkets and other shops where one can find a wide range of products, including from other countries. Similarly, banking facilities are available. The closest UN clinic is in Erbil, but Dohuk has medical clinics and services that the staff can also easily access.

Iraq is a unique country and the mandate of UNITAD and is a fascinating and ground-breaking one. Dohuk provides for an interesting and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness, as well as more stamina and commitment than elsewhere to make life comfortable and affordable. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions, involving physical hardship and little comfort, are essential.
