With over 850 indigenous languages and one f the most ethnically diverse populations, widespread poverty, and gender inequality make it hard for many children to realize their rights. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), UNICEF’s works effectively both ‘upstream’ (with governments) and ‘downstream’ (at the grassroots level) to carry out its mission through a programme of cooperation jointly developed with the government guides our work in the country.

How can you make a difference?

The COVID-19 Emergency Health Consultant will work closely with the National Department of Health and other government partners, NGOs, Church health services, and the health cluster partners to channel UNICEF support to deliver critical Outbreak response activities to improve the management COVID-19 outbreak in PNG. Following are the specific tasks:

  • Support UNICEF to design and development of strategies for COVID-19 outbreak response management
  • Collaborate with partners to provide operational and technical support to the development and implementation of COVID-19 response activities in all provinces.
  • Technical support to NCC & NDOH on day to day outbreak response coordination and for mitigating measures
  • Technical support to PHAs in IPC, surveillance, clinical management and risk communication activities implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Review and assessment PPE & IPC need for evolving outbreak response and distribution and tracking of supplies
  • Guide and advise the CSOs and partners in implementing the health system strengthening activities for COVID-19 response throughout the country.
  • Monitoring & evaluation of UNICEF supported capacity building, logistic supplies, medical supplies, surveillance improvement, and risk communication activities.
  • Data collection and compilation and reporting on the progress of the UNICEF supported COVID-19 response activities.
  • Review and assess routine and critical health services and advise measures to continue these activities in compliance with the niupela pasin (new normal).

As a champion for every child, you will have…

  • a University degree in Medicine, Public Health, Community Health or related fields (preferably with specialized training in epidemiology, disease control, immunization, health education, and/or healthcare system management
  • At least five years of professional work experience at the national levels in planning, programming, implementation monitoring and evaluation of routine and emergency health programmes. Professional work experience in a managerial position, or a technical expert position in health is preferred.
  • Working experience with the Government, NGOs, (UN and relevant agencies experience will be an asset
  • Training and proven experience on humanitarian interventions in health
  • Working experience in emergency settings is required.
  • Fluency in English is required and a working knowledge of the local language is preferred.
