How can you make a difference?

The consultant will be required to copy-edit, layout and design Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergency Guide (109 pages) and the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) Operational Guideline (149 pages). Language: Copy editing is required. Editing will also involve ensuring consistency and accuracy in the numbering and labelling, graphs, tables, charts and in-text cross referencing of annexures and tables throughout the document, redesign of some of the annexures, and removing the 2nd decimal from all the percentages depicted in the tables and graphs. Artwork: Illustrations/Photos Artwork is required for the cover pages. Photos may be used for the cover page. When additional photos are used in the documents, the following guidelines must be followed: - Use of age appropriate photos, depicting the diversity and demographics of South Africa; - Photos shall be obtained from either the UNICEF photo bank or National Department of Health (NDOH) or any other acceptable stock photo/image database; and - All photos/images shall be subject to UNICEF’s and NDOH’s’s prior approval.

Design and layout requirements:

Design and layout of documents in accordance with UNICEF and NDOH requirements which will include the following:

i. Branding for the IYCF- E guidelines and the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) Operational Guideline;

ii. Use of artwork, which include the UNICEF and NDOH logos and the photos/related artwork;

iii. Create a table of content, table of figures, as well as all other additional pages that are required to ensure that the publication reflects a high professional standard;

iv. Convert other texts into flow diagrams/ algorithm , graphs, tables, infographics, to reduce the content to be succinct and user-friendly etc. In line with NDOH recommendations;

v. The IYCF-E document, including the Annexures is approximately between 39,000 and 40,000 words in total. The IMAM Guidelines, including the Annexures is approximately between 49,000 and 50,000 words in total.

The draft versions of the documents are available as a Word file and will be provided to the Consultant.

Look and feel: The following is required in terms of the look-and-feel:

i. The service provider shall provide at least 2 samples “look and feel” for each publication (4 samples in total) within 8 days of the signing of the contract.

ii. UNICEF and NDOH must approve the “look and feel” before the designer commences with the assignment.

iii. In the case where none of the initial “look and feel” samples is acceptable, the service provider shall, after discussion with NDOH and UNICEF, provide four additional “look and feel” samples for a final decision.

Drafts:

The service provider shall provide a draft of the design and layout copy for review by UNICEF and NDOH on a date as agreed.

i. Incorporate all comments on the design and layout as provided by UNICEF and NDOH.

Formats:

The service provider will provide the final products, via electronic communication (email) and using Dropbox or similar large file transfer systems, which shall include the following:

i. Original version of graphically designed material;

ii. All artwork used in high resolution;

iii. Print- ready version of the document in PDF (high resolution);

iv. PDF versions for website and electronic distribution (low resolution);

v. Detailed print specifications; and

vi. One printed hard copy of the final version, if requested.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • A university degree in English, Communication, designing and layout, or any relevant qualification
  • High-level copy-editing, design, and layout of professional publications (provide links for the sample work)
  • At least five years of experience in handling publications of this nature (i.e. medical and health), especially work with the international development community; and
  • Excellent understanding and command of English at the native level, Plain English writing and editing and designing skills.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
