Migration places individuals in situations which may impact their physical and mental well-being. Conditions surrounding the migration process can increase the vulnerability to ill health. Migration also cuts across economic and social policies, human rights and equity issues, development agendas, and social norms – all of which are relevant to migration health. The East and Horn of Africa has historically been part of global migration and trade networks and continues to play an important role in both. Countries in the region face a common crisis which includes drought, floods, armed conflicts, acute food shortages and mass displacements; complicated by a lack of resources access to any health services for majority of its population. IOM through its regional and country offices and close partnership with governments and relevant partners is contributing to advancing the migration health agenda. This migration profile document was developed to inform IOM programming and it shows Migration Trends Relevant to Public Health, 2019 programmatic highlights on IOM Health Programming, IOM Support to Health Systems and more recently IOM response to COVID-19.
