Overview

  • University degree in physics, engineering, or natural sciences. A combination with health physics education is an asset.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant work experience in radiation protection in areas under existing exposure situations as per GSR Part 3, Section V.
  • Experience at the international level and as regulator is an asset.
  • Proven analytical thinking and skills in collecting and analysing measurements and drawing conclusions.
  • Experience in reviewing and summarizing technical documents and writing technical reports.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and safety in the transport of radioactive material that enable the beneficial uses of radiation to be exploited while ensuring appropriate protection of workers, the public, patients and the environment. It also assists Member States in the implementation of these standards and provides related services. The Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section is responsible for the delineation of an international programme to protect workers, patients and the public from all types of exposure to natural or artificial radiation, in line with the most recent scientific knowledge and information. The Section is also responsible for the provision of radiation safety technical services to staff members and experts who may be exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of activities conducted by the IAEA. The Radiation Protection Unit is responsible for supporting the Radiation Safety Standards Committee (RASSC) and for providing oversight of the development of radiation safety standards within the Safety Standards Series. It serves as the focal point for the development of general radiation protection documents for all types of exposure and situations, and for their integration and implementation. It also develops safety standards and guidance related to the protection of the public in existing exposure situations such as radon in buildings, radionuclides in building materials and other commodities, and non-medical imaging. Finally, the Unit maintains professional links with other international and specialist agencies concerned with radiation safety and promotes international coherence and consistency of radiation safety practice.

Main Purpose

Under the supervision of the Head of the Radiation Protection Unit, the Consultant will provide technical expertise to the Radiation Protection Unit in development of a technical document to set out radionuclide concentration values for non-food commodities, including international trade and other categories of exposure under Existing Exposure Situations as described in the IAEA standards, namely GSR Part 3. The Consultant also analyses data and prepares reports.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Develop a technical document to set out radionuclide activity concentration values for contaminated non-food commodities;
  • Provide technical expertise in the development of a discussion paper on radionuclides in all consumer goods;
  • Provide technical expertise in developing a Safety Report on radiation safety in international trade of commodities, particularly to collate worldwide available information on trade of non-food commodities, organise consultancy/technical meetings targeting to develop the safety report, collect, review and prepare input information related to managing surface contaminated items in trade relevant to the safety report;
  • Provide technical expertise in developing an overarching guidance on existing exposure situations.

Remuneration

The remuneration for this consultancy is a daily fee of up to a maximum of € 250, based on qualifications and experience. In case duty travel is required within the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs are provided. Health coverage and pension fund are the responsibility of the incumbent.
