Consultant - Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Specialist

Result of Service The Consultant will provide his/her knowledge and expertise to the conceptualisation and delivery of capacity-building activities related to psychosocial child assessment processes and psychosocial support implemented within the UNODC Global Programme to End Violence against Children and its STRIVE Juvenile Project.

The Consultant will perform the assigned functions under the overall guidance of the Psychosocial Support Specialist within the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section and the direct supervision of both the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer who acts as the Coordinator of the UNODC Global Programme to End Violence against Children and the Manager of the EU-funded project, STRIVE Juvenile.

Duties and Responsibilities The Consultant will be responsible for carrying out the following activities:

• Mapping conditions, steps, actors involved in the conduct of child assessment processes in the context of association with terrorist and violent extremist groups in Nigeria.

• Conceptualising and delivering capacity-building activities related to psychosocial child assessment processes and psychosocial support.

The consultant will be responsible for delivery of the following outputs:

• Elaborate a detailed workplan.

• Produce a list of key stakeholders involved in child assessment processes in Nigeria (including MPHSS facilities and organizations)

• Support the elaboration of questionnaires for key stakeholders to understand the circumstances, challenges and conditions in which child assessment processes take place.

• Conduct a field mission to disseminate and administer the questionnaires in Nigeria.

• Participate in the delivery of capacity-building sessions on child assessment processes in Nigeria.

• Elaborate a short report (15 pages) mapping child assessment process and stakeholders (including MPHSS facilities and organizations)

• Provide inputs on the guidance note on psychosocial assessment of children associated with terrorist groups.

  Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in social work, psychology, or related mental health field is required. A first level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience: At least 5 years of MHPSS-related work experience - including at least 2 years with children associated with organized criminal and armed groups, including terrorist groups - is required;

Knowledge on the situation of Nigeria related to child association with organized criminal and armed groups, including terrorist groups is required;

Work experience in the Northeast of Nigeria is desirable;

Experience in developing reports and materials regarding MHPSS is required;

Experience in psychosocial assessment of children in conflict affected areas is desirable;

Experience with 4Ws mapping in conflict affected areas is desirable;

Experience with MHPSS in Juvenile Justice including in juvenile facilities is desirable;

Knowledge of legal and judicial aspects relating to violence against children and justice for children is desirable.

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage. Knowledge of the local language in Nigeria (Hausa) is desirable.
