The vision of the UNESCO Office for the Gulf Countries and Yemen is to “empower women and men to contribute to peaceful and inclusive knowledge-based societies, through education, the sciences, culture, and communication and information, in partnership with Member States, the private sector, and civil society, to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” In line with UNESCO’s global priorities and five major programmes, the UNESCO Office for the Gulf States and Yemen sets a local programme of action in consultation with the seven before-mentioned Member States. **ASSIGNMENTS AND EXPECTED RESULTS** ------------------------------------- Under the authority and direct supervision of the Director of the UNESCO Office for the Gulf States and Yemen and Representative for the Arab States of the Gulf and Yemen and in close collaboration with all the Sector Chiefs, the Consultant shall: \- Draft, review and edit speeches and daily official correspondence in Arabic to be addressed to Government officials, Diplomatic community and other stakeholders; \- Translate into Arabic from English (and vice versa) a wide variety of documents, including but not limited to briefings, papers, policy documents, official correspondence and speeches. \- Produce content in Arabic language based on briefs or English language drafts. \- Perform technical editing and copy-editing for readability and consistency, ensuring translated texts convey original meaning and tone. \- Undertake thorough linguistic and background research and verify terminology and references to use the most appropriate range of vocabulary related to UNESCO subject-matter areas, to complete translations within set deadlines in close consultation with sector colleagues. \- Develop and cultivate a Technical Terms Bank and Arabic/English Glossary in close collaboration with the Sector Chiefs. \- Ensure impartiality, and confidentiality of information at all times. \- Perform any other duties related to the nature of the job. **Deliverables:** The Consultant shall submit to UNESCO monthly reports summarizing activities undertaken, achievements, progress made and challenges, as well as measures taken against the challenges of the tasks implemented (as per the template to be shared by UNESCO). **Payment schedule:** The payments will be made in monthly installments based upon deliverables and acceptance of work and endorsement by UNESCO. **Duration:** 06 months from signature of contract. Additional certification in Arabic Linguistics is an asset; experience in international cooperation / international relations; familiar with a broad range of subjects dealt with by UNESCO (education, sciences, culture, communication and information). **Experience:** At least five years of relevant work experience as an Arabic Editor; demonstrated experience of translation and language mastery with emphasis on diplomatic and official protocols of correspondence; full proficiency in desktop publishing and editing; previous experience with UN agencies or other international organizations will be an asset; strong contextual knowledge of the Middle East and Gulf region would be an asset. **Language:** Perfect command of Arabic and fluency in English. **Other skills:** Excellent drafting and writing skills; excellent proofreading skills with the ability to identify grammar, spelling and punctuation errors; ability to work independently on delegated tasks; a keen eye for detail; time-management skills and ability to work against tight deadlines; team spirit. **REMUNERATION** ----------------- The payments will be made in monthly installments at QAR. 18,000/- (Eighteen thousand Qatari Riyals only) per month, based upon deliverables and acceptance of work and endorsement by UNESCO **SELECTION AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS** ------------------------------------- Please note that all candidates must complete an on-line application and provide complete and accurate information.
