How can you make a difference?

Background:

Project GIGA represents a pioneering initiative to pilot the delivery of internet connectivity to educational institutions, thereby enhancing learning outcomes for children in Sierra Leone. This venture is a collaborative effort between UNICEF and the Directorate of Science, Technology, and innovation.

Purpose and Objectives: The GIGA Accelerate Project has successfully implemented Internet access in 42 schools across Sierra Leone. This full-day workshop aims to assess the project's success, identify areas for improvement, and facilitate collaboration among GIGA team members, with a particular focus on the Islamic Development Bank Project.

Methodology and Technical Approach:

  1. Data Collection:
  • Use online surveys and phone interviews for pre-workshop surveys with headteachers and teachers.
  • Conduct focus group discussions with students from four schools.
  • Capture detailed notes during discussions.
  1. Content Preparation:

- Review survey and focus group findings to inform workshop content. - Develop engaging materials and activities aligned with workshop objectives.

  1. Workshop Facilitation:

- Assign experienced facilitators to lead sessions. - Foster an inclusive environment using various facilitation techniques. - Manage time effectively to cover planned agenda items.

  1. Lessons Learned Report:

- Analyze data collected from surveys, focus groups, and workshop sessions. - Present insights and recommendations concisely, supported by examples. - Finalize the report with stakeholder feedback to ensure accuracy.

Specific Tasks:

  1. Pre-Workshop Survey with Headteachers and Teachers across 42 schools (a combination of online and phone).
  2. Pre-Workshop Focus Groups with Students across 4 identified schools within Freetown.
  3. Content Preparation (Engagement Session) for the Workshop.
  4. Workshop Facilitation.
  5. Lessons Learned Report.

Task, Deliverables & Timeline

Pre-Workshop Survey with Headteachers and Teachers across 42 schools (combination of online and phone). Deliverable: Anonymized Data Set. Timeline: 1.5 days

Pre-Workshop Focus Groups with Students across 4 identified schools within Freetown. Deliverable: Focus Group (FG) Notes. Timeline: 1 day

Content Preparation (Engagement Session) for Workshop. Deliverables: Workshop Content. Timeline: 1 day

Workshop Facilitation. Deliverable: Facilitated Workshop. Timeline: 1 day

Lessons Learnt Report. Deliverable: Comprehensive Lessons Learned Report. Timeline: 1.5 days

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in History Policy, Development Studies *A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
