Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.
And we never give up.
For every child, a future
Gender equality and equity are core values for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), and the programme recognizes that gender-responsive approaches further strengthen polio eradication interventions. Gender, along with other factors such as socio-economic background, age, and ethnicity, is an important social determinant of health, and as such, also has an impact on vaccination outcomes, the overall effectiveness of the programme and ultimately polio eradication. The GPEI developed a GPEI Gender Equality Strategy 2019–2023, strategy to guide the programme on gender equality which was endorsed by the Polio Oversight Board. The new Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026 has reflected the objectives of the GPEI Gender Equality Strategy through gender sensitive and specific Key Performance Indicators, committing to allocating 1% of the overall budget to properly resource gender expertise and activities and committing to the creation of a Gender Mainstreaming Group (ToR can be found here).
