Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Global Technical Team (GTT) of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM), in Vienna, Austria. The incumbent reports to the Senior Computational Linguist.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority and under the supervision of the Senior Computational Linguist, the Computational Linguist will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Ensure overall software quality of global computer-assisted translation and terminology tools services, documents and meetings workflow management systems and conference management workflow systems;
  • Manage DGACM global projects system common Azure cloud-based infrastructure, components and environments with a focus on resiliency, security and cost-efficiency;
  • Establish and evolve formal software quality assurance processes, ensuring that the team is using industry-accepted best practices including strong emphasis on test automation;
  • Act as key point of contact for all quality aspects of releases and other aspects of DGACM global project systems (infrastructure, environments, components, compliance), providing quality assurance services and coordinating quality assurance resources internally and externally;
  • Contribute to the maintenance and improvement of DGACM global projects interfaces;
  • Contribute to the development of other solutions compatible with DGACM global projects;
  • Provide support to DGACM global projects teams and related services and help to expand and improve their effectiveness;
  • Analyze user needs and contribute to the development of new or improved solutions, including by conducting feasibility studies; - Analyze and gather data systematically in order to contribute to regular reviews of DGACM global projects operations;
  • Keep abreast of both internal and external professional developments in areas relating to the DGACM global projects;
  • Manage and oversee the database administration and foundational components used by DGACM global projects;
  • Assist in implementing the teamwork plan and team policy relating to global projects systems and services;
  • Lead and mentor Quality Assurance and DevOps team members, conduct performance evaluations and performance management of team members including outside contractors.

    Education A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Computational Linguists. A combination of a postgraduate degree and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the competitive examination requirement. International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) certification is required. Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and ISO 27001, 27005 certifications is required.

    Work Experience A combined minimum of five years of experience in software development, quality assurance, and IT infrastructure management is required. A minimum of two years of experience as a computational linguist or in planning, design, development, implementation and maintenance of language technologies, products and systems or a related area, preferably within the United Nations system or similar international organization, is required. A minimum of two years of experience in working with Azure cloud environment is required. Training and practical experience with the PRINCE 2 methodology is desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of one or more additional UN official languages is desirable.

    Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

    Special Notice Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Computational Linguists.
