The Urban Basic Services Section of UN-Habitat is mandated to improve the access to urban basic services, including sustainable solid waste management by collecting data on municipal solid waste management, improving policies and guidelines in partnership with local, regional and national authorities, creating an enabling environment for promoting investments in sustainable waste management with a focus on the urban poor and increasing coverage of sustainable waste management services in communities.

Under the direct supervision of the Waste Management Expert/ Associate Waste Management Expert, Urban Basic Service Section, UN-Habitat, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Assess business practices of waste collection services conducted by Community Based Organizations in Nairobi, Mombasa and other cities in Kenya. • Conduct questionnaire survey for African Clean Cities Platform members about chal-lenges in waste collection business practices in low-income and informal settlements. • Analyse challenges and opportunities for the waste collection services provided in low-income and informal settlements in Kenya.
• Assess the WTP (willingness to pay) for waste collection services of households in low-income and informal settlements in Nairobi, Mombasa and other cities in Kenya. • Develop an effective awareness raising strategy for households in low income and in-formal settlements to pay the waste collection services provided by CBOs. • Conduct awareness raising campaign involving the schools and churches for the clean cities and improve the willingness to pay for waste collection services • Participate in meetings with local government officials and Kenya’s EPR stakeholders’ meetings to establish the financial flow from producers’ organizations to CBOs for ex-pansion of waste collections in low-income areas and informal settlements in Nairobi, Mombasa and other cities • Compile lessons learned and recommendations on waste collection service expansion business practices and awareness raising to increase WTP for Africa, using the cases in Nairobi and Mombasa

Experience working on community engagement, environmental management, and community based recycling is desirable. Previous international experience(s) and of (an)other culture(s), (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded; and Previous experience at the United Nations, UN-Habitat or other international organizations on administration , Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or environment would be considered an advantage.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighbouring So-malia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO). Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta Inter-national Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP. The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
