The Assosa region is situated in the northwestern part of Ethiopia, bordering Sudan and South Sudan to the west, Oromia to the south and southeast, and Amhara to the north and northeast. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is located in the region, highlighting its strategic significance. Known for its abundance of natural resources, including gold, marble, coal, and bamboo forests, the region is divided into three administrative zones and one special woreda. It encompasses 26 rural woredas/districts, three of which host refugees in three refugee camps, along with three town administrations. The administrative capital, Assosa Town, lies approximately 661 km from Addis Ababa and 96 km from the Ethio-Sudanese border. Designated as the cradle of nations and nationalities from across the country, the Benishangul-Gumuz Region boasts a diverse array of ethnic groups coexisting peacefully. However, the region faces challenges such as unemployment, limited access to basic services, and gaps in social security and health insurance coverage. Assosa serves as the capital of the Benishangul-Gumuz Region, Ethiopia, located about 670 kilometers northwest of Addis Ababa.
