This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Since 2014, the UNCT Brazil, under OHCHR leadership, implements the Free & Equal Campaign in the country, raising awareness of homophobic and transphobic violence and discrimination, and promoting greater respect for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people . This assignment will contribute to enhancing the dissemination of the UN Free & Equal Campaign in Brazil and the implementation of UN interagency activities related to sexual orientation, gender identity/expression and sexual characteristics (SOGIESC) issues. The UN Volunteer will collaborate closely and will be based out of the UN Information Centre (UNIC Rio) office.

Within the delegated authority and under the overall supervision of the UN Human Rights Adviser, functional support and guidance from OHCHR and direct/ operational supervision of the UNIC Communications Officer and the UN Communications Manager, in close cooperation with UN Agencies, the UN Volunteer Communication Specialist will undertake the following tasks:

Program support delivery • Assists the OHCHR Regional Office for South America (ROSA) in the preparation of reports, briefings, studies, background papers, conceptual notes and in responding to internal and external inquiries and information requests. • Supports the organization of missions, conferences, workshops, trainings, technical meetings, seminars and others. • Supports the liaison with relevant stakeholders, including UN organisms, government, civil society organizations and other relevant actors, including the from other UN Free & Equal campaign in other Portuguese speaking countries. • Performs related duties as required.

Communication and advocacy • Assists in producing appealing and well written publications, online pieces and social media content, including videos and graphic materials for OHCHR and UN in Brazil websites and social media channels as appropriate. • Assists the planning and organization of UN events, and the UN participation in events related to human rights themes, including conferences, seminars and other external events, communicating clearly and efficiently with different kinds of audiences. • Assists in drafting routine correspondence, memoranda, letters, invitations and other documents. • Supports the communication in writing documents and liaising with partners to collect information relevant to the implementation of the human rights workplan. • Takes part of online meetings with the UN Free & Equal global team in Geneva and assists with Portuguese assets and website stories.

Administrative support to programs • Provides administrative support for missions, conferences, workshops, training, technical meetings, seminars and other activities, including through the request and follow up of procurement services. • Supports the technical and financial reporting of activities undertaken. Performs other related work as required.

Communications or other relevant programmes • Experience with SOGIESC (sexual orientation and gender identity/expression and sexual characteristics) issues is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization; • Experience in producing online pieces and social media content, including videos and graphic materials, is required Other desired/mandatory required technical knowledge; • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, among others), email, and internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines

The assignment will be in Rio de Janeiro. As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and other living essentials. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan. The level of security in Brazil is moderate (3). The United Nations Department of Security - UNDSS Brazil advises to exercise a high degree of caution in Brazil due to the high levels of serious and violent crimes, particularly in large cities. Violent crimes such as robberies, armed robberies, kidnappings and sexual assaults are very high. All UN personnel must scrupulously follow UNDSS procedures and recommendations during their assignment in Brazil. For missions in rural areas, indigenous reserves and favelas, special procedures may apply. UN personnel should consult the local DSS office in advance.

Living in Rio de Janeiro requires a mature level of security awareness, as well as stamina and commitment. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions.
