For more than 25 years, UNODC, through its Country Office in Nigeria, has been cooperating with the Federal Government, its specialized agencies, the judiciary, as well as select State Governments, civil society, and the private sector in making Nigeria safer from drugs, crime, and terrorism. In doing so, UNODC, as part of the United Nations Country Team, is contributing to Nigeria’s achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Presently and in line with its Strategic Vision for Nigeria 2030, UNODC is providing support to the Nigerian Government and other stakeholders in their efforts across five priority areas of; (i) Enhancing the ability of the criminal justice system to uphold the rule of law, ensure access to justice and protect victims of crime, (ii) Safeguarding people, institutions and the economy from corruption and illicit financial flows, (iii) Securing the safety of people from terrorism and violent extremism, (iv) Protecting people, the economy and the environment against organized crime and; (v) Promoting people’s health through drug and HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Country Representative or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the National UNV Communication Officer will coordinate and support the implementation of the office Communication Strategy. More specifically, he/she will: • Draft/compile a specific type (e.g., print, broadcast, etc.), of information communications products for target audiences, to include press releases, media packets and reports, brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters etc. including branding, editing, subtitling, archiving, animations, adapting scripts and graphics, etc.; • Maintain UNODC Nigeria’s website and social media presence, including dedicated mailing lists, the twitter account as well as Facebook and Instagram pages; • Increase the visibility of UNODC Nigeria Country Office in terms of activities and results; including preparing communication regular reports and statistics on related activities; • Provide support in liaising and maintaining a regular exchange with the UN Information Centre in Nigeria, Advocacy section in HQ, and other relevant UNODC and UN entities in Nigeria and HQ for promotion opportunities; • Participate on behalf of UNODC in Nigeria in the UN Communications Group; • Coordinate press events, interviews, and other activities related to information dissemination to the general public to promote UNODC activities. • In consultation with other team members, identify and propose information opportunities, activities and approaches, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience; • Identify key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to facilitate communication efforts and maintain working relationships with the same; • Build relationships with conventional media, facilitate and prepare for the country office’s media engagements; • Facilitate the improvement of communication skills and knowledge among UNODC staff in Nigeria;
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Country Representative.

The assignment will take place in the nation’s capital, Abuja (Hardship Classification C). Abuja is housed by many expatriate and diplomatic communities. Cost of living in Abuja varies but could be termed as high considering the class of people residing in the capacity. Terrorism is the main threat in the Abuja. General crime is also prevalent. UN staff members are advised to stay only in UNDSS assessed hotels and residential areas. There are various transportation means in Abuja; buses, trains, airplanes and taxis. The Nation’s capital also hosts the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport where local and international flights operate daily. Rental expense is quite expensive and a rental agreement is usually not less than 1 year. Landlords usually require that the full rent be paid upfront; however, there are few exceptions.

There is a rich culture of hospitality and warmth by Nigerians complemented by an active social environment and diplomatic community that exists in the FCT with several shopping malls and restaurants to visit.
