Result of Service The International Meeting of Mine Action Directors and United Nations Advisers is the annual gathering of member states and practitioners from the United Nations, civil society organizations and the private sector. The platform enables them to share their views of mine action matters of mutual interest and reach a common understanding of challenges and solutions at hand. The agenda of the conference is field-focused and reflects challenges faced, lessons learned and best practices in mine action. The meeting will be co-hosted by the Swiss government.

The role of the individual contractor will focus on supporting communications and outreach efforts of the meeting; developing social-media-focused content, including audio-visual items; undertaking the social-media coverage of the event, daily publishing of the content across multiple platforms; generating meeting-related content ahead and during the conference.

The services will be up to five months period, subject to funds availability.

Duties and Responsibilities This Individual Contractor opening is located in the Geneva office of United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) within the Office of the Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The incumbent will report to the Chief of the UNMAS Geneva office. Within limits of delegated authority, the Communication Coordinator may be responsible for the following duties: - Facilitate the successful preparation and smooth execution of the International Meeting of Mine Action Directors and United Nations Advisers, including assist with the selection and preparation of a digital platform to host the event, and work with IT staff to ensure adequate video coverage; liaise with event participants to provide technical advice on digital platform use (if hybrid meeting); create and disseminate instructional materials on this subject. - Develop and implement a strategy for the meeting’s communication, media relations, publications, web and digital media with the objective of promoting awareness, understanding, support and respect for multilateral mine action. - Coordinate the development of communications products and content surrounding the meeting, ensuring accurate and consistent messaging, branding, and alignment with the communications strategy. - Prepare reports to UNMAS leadership on communications activities, developments, trends and attitudes, and coordinate with other sections of the UNMAS Public Information Unit when appropriate. - Monitor social media and analyze social media statistics and web usage, adapting editorial and outreach priorities accordingly. - Develop and implement a campaign system-wide and incorporate the campaign message and themes into all relevant events and products. - Draft and edit, material for press releases, key messages, Q&As, talking points, UN newsletter reports, and books. - Write human interest stories and produce digital content for UNMAS social media platforms. - Produce reports, newsletters, and other materials of interest to internal audiences. - Ensure meeting preparation team internal communication is up to date and accurate. - Other related duties that may be assigned.

Qualifications/special skills Experience: - Experience in online communications, social media marketing and/or public information / relations is required. - Experience in planning or organizing workshops and conferences is required. - Experience with the full range of communications approaches, tools, and methodologies essential to planning and executing effective campaign strategies and programmes, e.g. campaign management, media operations, marketing and promotion, audience outreach, message targeting. - Experience rapidly analyzing and integrating diverse information from varied sources. - Ability to diplomatically handle sensitive situations with target audiences and cultivate productive relationships. Knowledge of relevant internal policies and business activities/issues. - Ability to produce a variety of written communications products in a clear, concise style. - Experience with CMS including WordPress & Drupal. High level of comfort with graphic design, video production and editing. - Familiarity with main social media platforms, including UNMAS and Global Protection Cluster platforms, and experience running social media campaigns.

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

As a specialized service of the United Nations located within the Department of Peace Operations, UNMAS operates under UN legislative mandates of both the General Assembly and the Security Council. UNMAS also responds to specific requests for support from the UN Secretary-General or designated official.
