Zimbabwe is one of 22 countries implementing the joint UN-EU Spotlight Initiative to end violence against women and girls.

The Spotlight Initiative demands for more and better communication on what the UN development system does, how it operates, and what Member States get from their investments in the system.

The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office intends to hire a National UN Volunteer (Communications Officer) in line with the Spotlight project document for the no-cost extension period of July to September 2023. The incumbent will bridge the gap leading to the end of the Spotlight Initiative Programme cycled on 30 June 2023 to the 30th of September 2023. The programme is currently implementing a 3 month no cost extension to conclude all activities.

The Spotlight Initiative in Zimbabwe aims to ensure women and girls realize their full potential in a violent-free, gender responsive and inclusive Zimbabwe. The Initiative will ensure all women and girls benefit from adequate legislation and policies, gender responsive institutions, violence prevention programmes, essential services, comparable and reliable data, and strong women’s movements and civil society organizations.

Under the direct supervision of RCO Communications, Partnerships and Development Finance Specialist, the national UNV will undertake the following tasks: • Contribute to communications, visibility, public outreach and reporting requirement for the whole Spotlight Initiative project, covering all six outcomes • Assist in effective planning and implementation of communication, advocacy, public outreach plan of the Spotlight Initiative • Prepare draft on all public materials on Spotlight Initiative, including content for website, social media, stories of impact, news releases, presentations, and communications and visibility related reports; • Identify and provide input for the design and production of well-targeted information/communication materials, including drafting scripts for audio-visual materials, posters, brochures and reports; • In collaboration with RUNOS collate articles for Spotlight results brief, newsletters, media briefings, fact sheets, and statements; • Contribute to planning, development and implementation of effective public outreach for targeted communication and outreach activities for the targeted audience and stakeholders of the Spotlight Initiative; • Participate in organizing regular high-level events, individual briefings and field visits as appropriate in preparation for monthly, quarterly and/or annual reports related to communications and visibility plan of the Spotlight Initiative

Results/Expected Output:

The UNV Communications and Visibility Officer will contribute to the following outputs as outlined in the Spotlight Initiative Communications and Visibility Plan:

• Consistent, clear and evidence-based messages on harmful practices, sexual and gender-based violence, violence against women and Spotlight’s response using national data for online and offline dissemination. • Increased visibility of the Spotlight initiative and the role of EU and UN visibility on the Spot-light to end violence against women and girls and their role in other interlinked development support to Zimbabwe. • Successful implementation of high level national and local launch of the Spotlight Initiative through preparing IEC materials including banners, posters brochure, multi-media, social media, and media opportunities. • Facilitation of community dialogue, testimonials from survivors, public forums, exhibits, lectures and seminars in varsities and schools on Spotlight Initiative to end violence against women and girls. • Any other tasks related to the Spotlight Initiative assigned by the UNRCO Communications, Partnerships and Development Specialist.

in Journalism and Mass Communications; Social Science; Development Studies; International Relations; Law, Gender/Women studies; Human Rights, governance; public health and any other related sectors. • Advocacy and communications in development and humanitarian areas, particularly on gender equality, ending violence against women and girls, sexual reproductive health rights, and human rights.

Zimbabwe is located in Southern Africa and has three seasons, cool and dry from May-Aug, hot and dry from Sep-Nov, warm and wet from Dec-Apr. The capital Harare lies at an altitude of 1450m above sea level. The middle plateau is Malaria free and prophylaxis is highly recommended in low lying and hot areas. The currency in use is USD and all basic food and accessories are available. There are public and private health facilities as well as many social amenities available in Harare.
