UNICEF Syria's communication section works to communicate and advocate for the most disadvantaged children in Syria and develop a coordinated, consistent, and cutting-edge communication and public advocacy approach to show the situation on the ground, highlight the work the organization, together with partners, is doing and demonstrate the impact it is making.

The Communication Officer in the Aleppo field office will be out of the office during the period of November 2023 to August 2024, and the field office in Aleppo and the communication section in Damascus will need additional capacity to deliver high quality results and technical support to the programme teams.

How can you make a difference?

You will act as the communication focal point in the Aleppo field office between the field office and the communication section at the country office. This will include providing support to the communication section to identify, collect and develop compelling communication content and materials linked to the emergencies and other key priorities in the geographical areas covered by the Aleppo field office.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

  1. With the supervision of the Chief of Field Office and in close contact with the programme colleagues in the field office and the communication section at the country office help to identify, collect, and draft compelling stories and materials linked to the ongoing programmes and communication priorities.
  2. Support the communication section in undertaking communication content collection missions in field locations covered by the Aleppo field office and work together with programme colleagues as well as with professional photographers and videographers and draft written content – including captions, quotes, draft human-interest stories, and photo essays – for the use of the communication section at country office level
  • Assist in producing the written content by conducting interviews, collecting quotes, and pulling together draft stories, social media content, among others.
  • Contribute to preparation of human-interest stories that show how UNICEF supported activities have impacted the lives of individuals, families, and communities.
  1. Liaise closely with all relevant internal stakeholders to ensure high quality results and appropriateness of country specific communication materials, activities, processes, and messages.

To qualify as a champion for every child you will have the below requirement:

Education****:

  • A first university degree in one of the areas that are relevant to organization work, preferred areas including but not limited to Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or any other area that is considered relevant to work as described in the vacancy announcement supplemented with experience in the field of Communication.

Work Experience:

  • One year of practical, professional work experience in communication, print and broadcast media, or interactive digital media.
  • Field work experience and background/familiarity with emergency situations is required.
  • Field work experience is a strong asset.

Language Proficiency:

Fluency in English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Technical Skills:

  • Excellent editing and writing skills are required.
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) applications working proficiency is required.
  • Basic knowledge of photo and video editing applications is an asset but not a must.
